  1. Infrared & Ultrasound Two Proven Technologies ‘To Help Keep Your Plant Running’

  2. Increase your Equipment ReliabilitywithInfrared Technology

  3. What is Infrared? • Infrared is a form of electromagnetic radiation • Everything above -273 oC (absolute zero) emits infrared radiation • The heat we feel from the sun is infrared energy

  4. Advantages of Infrared • Allows you to ‘see’ heat • Cost effective • Fast, non-invasive & safe to implement • Minimal downtime as a result of electrical and mechanical problems • Effective prioritization of repairs • Improved employee safety • Energy savings • Wide range of applications

  5. The Infrared Camera • The Infrared Camera sees the total energy emitted by an object and translates it to temperature.

  6. Infrared Image Interpretation Emmissivity

  7. Infrared Thermometer A common misapplication of the Infrared Thermometer relates to its Distance-to-Spot Ratio. The size of the laser spot is not the size of the actual area being measured. A typical D:S ratio of 12:1 means the area of measurement’s diameter is 1’ if you are 12’ away from the object being measured.

  8. Industrial Infrared Applications • Bearings • Electrical Panels • Transformers • Motors & Drives • Compressors & Pumps • Power Supplies • Floor Heat • Liquid Storage • HVAC, Computers & more…

  9. Other Infrared Applications • Home & Building Heat Loss • Veterinary • Medical • Search & Rescue • Fire & Heat Detection • Security • Moisture & Water Leak Detection • Plumbing Blockages • Animal or Insect Infestations • Aviation & Marine

  10. Increase your Equipment ReliabilitywithUltrasound Technology

  11. What is Ultrasound? • Human range (16Hz to 18KHz) • Industry Applied range (20KHz to 100KHz) is Heterodyned for Audible Human range • Diagnostic Ultrasound is for Medical Imaging

  12. Advantages of Ultrasound • Directional & Locatable • Useful in Many Environments • Early Warning Failure Indication • Wide Range of Applications • Supports Other Technologies

  13. The Ultrasonic Probe • An Ultrasonic Probe hears electrical & mechanical problems as well as airborne disturbances.

  14. PF-Curve

  15. Ultrasonic Applications • Pressure & Vacuum Leaks • Compressed Air & Gas Leaks • Heat Exchangers • Boilers & Condensers • Tanks & Pipes • Valves & Steam Traps • Mechanical Inspection • Bearings • Lubrication Problems • Pumps & Motors • Gears & Gear Boxes • Fans • Compressors • Conveyors • Electrical Equipment • Switchgears • Transformers • Insulators • Junction Boxes • Circuit Breakers • Automotive • Rail • Marine • Aviation

  16. Leak Detection Electrical Inspection Mechanical Inspection Application Groups

  17. Ultrasonic Leak Detection Compressed Air Systems Specialty Gases - Argon, Nitrogen, Oxygen Underground/ Behind Walls Vacuum Leaks Valves & Steam Traps

  18. Estimating Air Loss Costs

  19. Underground Leaks Ultrasonics along with Infrared Imaging has successfully located Floor Heating System leaks embedded in 8” of concrete Heating loops were mapped on floor. The line was pressurized with air to 50 psi so the Ultrasonics could pinpoint the leak for quick repair.

  20. Valves & Steam Traps Valves Effect Flow; Leakage can effect the efficiency of the system Determine if the valve flow is upstream or downstream Test all types of valves, even while operational. Determine if a trap is operating properly.

  21. Bad Compressor Valve Good Valve Bad Valve

  22. Inverted Bucket Trap Normal Trap Failed Open

  23. Ultrasonic Electrical Inspection Inspect enclosed systems while energized Scan switchgear ‘before’ opening to inspect with infrared Prevent ‘Arc Flash’ injury Sort equipment for further inspection

  24. Electrical Equipment Switchgear Transformers Insulators Relays Breakers Power Supplies

  25. Arc Flash • Arc flash can kill. • There are many causes of arc flash. It can occur in any electrical equipment regardless of voltage. • There are conditions, that produce the potential for arc flash within enclosed cabinets, that can be detected before flashover or arc flash incidents can occur. • These conditions are arcing, tracking and corona.

  26. Arc Flash Conditions Corona Only occurs at 1000V or higher, and is undetectable by infrared inspection. Tracking Destructive dielectric breakdown that results in a fault in the insulator. Arcing The main concern in low voltage systems

  27. Transformers & Power Supplies FFT (dB vs frequency) Time Series (dB vs seconds) High Voltage Components are well enclosed, making for poor or sometimes impossible infrared inspection Good Transformer Loose Transformer Good Power Supply Shorting Supply

  28. Ultrasonic Mechanical Inspection Slow Speed Bearings Condition Based Lubrication Historical Trending

  29. Bearing Inspection Very effective on Slow Speed Applications Types of testing performed Comparison Historical Trending Spectrum Analysis

  30. Good Bearing Suspect Bearing Receiving Lubrication 3 min. Post Lubrication Bearing Testing

  31. Levels of Severity Base on dB level above baseline • 8 dB Lubrication Required • 12 dB Minor Damage (microscopic faults) • 16 dB Damage (Visual faults) • 35+dB Failure Imminent
