    3. Major Phases in Ed. Tech. Instructional design. Focus of content. Studies comparing technology to teachers. Message design. Focus of representation. Studies of what technologies can do uniquely. Learning environment design. Focus on interaction. Studies of how students adapt to environments.

    4. Major “isms”. Behaviorism Technology affects how people act. Research on how stimuli change behavior. Cognitivism Emphasis on how thought mediates action. How technology influences and imitates thought. Constructivism Knowledge is built by learners, often in interaction with other people. The as yet unnamed “ism”. Learning emerges from the self-organization of complex, dynamic systems in which students are embedded. Need to return quantitative, scientific rigor to educational research and activity. Neuroscience and Biology as the fundamental sciences.

    5. Research Methods. Experimental. Quantitative. Control of variables. Largely lab. based. Contextualized. Qualitative. Ethnographic Systemic. Design experiments. Environmental Systems theoretic. Complex and dynamic. Quantitative.
