  1. Media Ecology Component 4 – Section B

  2. Henry Jenkins • Jenkins coined the term 'textual poaching'.   • The word 'poaching' means 'stealing'.   • He thinks that audiences like to 'steal' content from the media products the love, and remix them into their own media products.  • The Hillywood Show textually poaches content from cult film and tv and reworks it into musical numbers with a parody feel.  They 'steal' the characters and some narratives, but remake it with their own cast, lyrics, music etc.

  3. Textual Poaching • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gneBUA39mnI • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKV6h_5XFbk • This You Tube Channel takes real famous speeches / historical events and redubs them based on comically bad lip reading.

  4. Textual Poaching • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFZBz3ZiQbk • This prosumer has 'stolen' the storyline of the first Jurassic Park film and made a montage / short version, using zero budget, and everyday items.

  5. Impact of textual poachers / prosumers on professional companies Positives Increased promotion of their products Widens their audience reach Potential increase in profits as a result of the above two points Negatives Their products could become a joke / mocked Prosumers using their copyrighted content without paying for the rights so artists not being paid Their company loses some of their power

  6. Charles Leadbeater – We Think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiP79vYsfbo

  7. Charles Leadbeater • The audience is taking to the stage” • “The 20th Century was defined by mass production for mass consumption. The 21st Century is being defined by mass innovation.” • “[The Internet] is like a bird’s nest where everyone leaves their piece.” • “People are drawn to these communities not to get rich, but to socialise and get recognition for the work they do.”

  8. It is important to ask ‘to what extent are the audience taking to the stage?’  • How much time do you spend producing and uploading content such as a video to YouTube, music to Soundcloud or writing a (non school-related) blog? • How does this compare to the amount of time you spend consuming content that has been mass produced for you by ginormous corporations such as Netflix, BBC, mailonline, Disney/Marvel?   • It is also really important to remember that different audiences have different experiences and there are massive global variations due to a range of economic, technical and political factors

  9. During this course you will: • Study recent case studies across the TV, film and news industries and consider what they reveal about how technological development (in particular the internet) is effecting media industries, audiences and social structures • You will consider a range of theorists that will provide you with different ways of analysing case studies from the TV, film and news industries • This process will enable you to form your own opinions and arguments and structure these into essays

  10. Assessment • This topic is assessed by one essay written in your Component Four exam • It is the most extended piece of writing you will take in the two media exams, you will have 60 minutes to write this essay • You will need to produce a coherent response that draws on the ideas of a range of media theorists and uses these to closely examine a selection of case studies in detail

  11. Some different types of Media in the contemporary ecosystem • One-to-one media such as letters, telephones, text messages • Traditional mass media such as newspapers, magazines, billboards, leaflets, radio, television, film • New media such as Websites, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, Zoom, WhatsApp

  12. Morozov • Other theorists such as Evgeny Morozov have argued that despite new ways for audiences to participate in production and distribution, the vast majority of internet use is defined by consumption – in this way the internet is very similar to traditional mass media such as TV, Film and News • “Technology changes all the time; human nature, hardly ever”

  13. Some limitations • You Tube Regulation eg violence, gore, sex etc • Copyright restrictions • Money / Equipment can still have an impact

  14. THINK ABOUT THIS ESSAY TITLE PREP THIS WEEK: WRITE 2 CHUNKY PARAGRAPHS ONLY IN RESPONSE TO THIS EXAM STYLE QUESTION. NO INTRO OR CONCLUSION NECESSARY THIS WEEK. • How has digital technology changed the relationship between audiences and producers?  Make reference to at least 2 forms of media in your answer eg film and social media.

  15. Are audiences really 'free' to make whatever they like?
