  1. Chapters 31-35:   Metamorphosis of the FROG                                  upon the GRASSE     In this 5th stage of his life Grenouille has been reborn through the making of his own scent.  We see a total metamorphosis! • Previuosly "he had no shadow... to cast across another's face" and people looked at him like "a creature that ought not even to exisit" (154). • But his new perfume makes people "accept him" (153) • His confidence grows, symbolized by his straightened posture (160); "he gained some facility in speaking" and lying (159); and he now heads directly toward the goal of making a "superhuman, an angel's scent" (154).

  2. A Key Passage (154)          Grenouille stood there like that in the bosom of the crowd for a good quarter of an hour, a strange child pressed sanctimoniously to his chest. And while the wedding party passed by--to the accompaniment of the booming bells and the cheers of the masses and pelting shower of coins--Grenouille broke out in a different jubilation, a black jubilation, a wicked feeling of triumph that set him quivering and excited like an attack of lechery, and he had trouble keeping from spurting it like venom and spleen all over all these people screaming exultantly in their faces: that he was not afraid of them; that he hardly hated them anymore; but that his contempt for them was so profound and total, because they were so dumb and stank; because they could be deceived by him, let themselves be deceived; because they were nothing and he was everything!

  3. Grenoullie is in the cave for 7 years from 1756 – 1763 (p. 119), the entire time of the 7 Years' War! The Seven Years' War was a global military conflict between 1756 and 1763, involving most of the great powers of the time Affected North and Central America, Europe, the West African coast, India and the Philippines… The Seven Years War

  4. The Enlightenment…also known as the Age of Reason • Cultural movement of intellectuals in 18th c. Europe • Advances in science clash with religious doctrine • Reformation of society in hopes of advancing knowledge • Promoted science and intellectual interchange & opposed superstition, intolerance, and abuses in church and state

  5. A Few Great Thinkers of the Time The Age of Reason was fueled by Great Philosophers: • Baruch Spinoza, Dutch rationalist • John Locke, English physician & political philosopher • Isaac Newton, English physicist • Voltaire, French historian & writer • Immanuel Kant, German philosopher & anthropologist • Denis Diderot, French philosopher, art critic, writer • Arthur Schopenhauer , German philosopher (& pessimist) Meeting in “salons” of the times, these thinkers exchanged radical thought and sought to reform skewed religious thinking. Ultimately, these men and many others created the Encyclopedie

  6. The Age of ReasonThe Paine Pamphlet The Enlightenment spread to the Colonies and its ideals were embraced by American Revolutionaries (i.e. Jefferson & Franklin) • A deistic pamphlet Thomas Paine • Against institutionalized religion and challenges the legitimacy of the Bible • Paine criticized the corrupt Christian Church and its efforts to acquire political power • He advocated reason in the place of revelation, leading him to reject miracles

  7. A. The Cave Why would Suskind have Grenouille remain in the cave during this all-encompassing global slaughter? What is the symbolic or allegoric meaning of the cave? B. Strange Science What purpose does this fluidumlatale/vitale theory serve in the novel? How does it serve as a comment/satire on the Age of Reason? Questions: Discuss at your tables C. Perfumery Identify the ingredients used by Grenouille to imitate the scent of humans and explain the blunt symbolism of the contents. If this serves as commentary on people of the time… what is the symbolic criticism here?

  8. Mapping the Frog Hops • Grenouille makes it to the famed Grasse! • His direct route symbolizes his newly discovered ambition. • Grasse itself stands as a parallel to Grenouille, "equally homely and self-confident." • The smell of the 2nd young girl stands as turning point... he will now have a "good two years" before his "time of harvest" (172).

  9. Find a Grassy Passage! For those NOT organizing the IAO • What is the most important KEY passage in chapter 35 (or beyond… if you read)? • Compare passages and, at your tables determine the BESTpassage (15-20ish lines) • What can you note about the passage and its overall importance to this “Welcome to Grasse” chapter (or beyond)? • What literary features highlight this importance? • Be prepared to read your passage and share your ideas?
