  2. Karl Friedrich Benz Karl Benz was born on November 25, 1844 in Karlsruhe, Germany. He is commonly regarded as the inventor of the gasoline powered automobile. Benz is known as the inventor because he was the first to gain a patent for his invention.

  3. Biography Karl Benz was born to Josephine Vaillant and Johann George Benz. Karl Benz was raised in near poverty but showed a talent for science in education. He went to grammar school and Lyzeum, a science oriented school. At fifteen, he attended the University of Carlsruhe. After coming into possession of a bicycle, Karl begin to envision concepts for the first gasoline powered car. However, during that time it was referred to as the horseless carriage.

  4. The First Automobile The first automobile was designated the Benz Patent Motorwagen.

  5. Formation of Mercedes-Benz In the 1920’s, shortly after the World War I, the German economy was facing a serious crisis. Karl Benz’s company was in deep trouble as well as another German automobile manufacturer known as Daimler Motors. In order to survive the two companies merged and became Mercedes-Benz.

  6. The Logo After the Daimler and Benz merged a new logo was conceived for the new company. The logo consisted of a three pointed star inside a ring. The three points were derived from Daimler’s motto, which was “Engines for Land, Air, and Water.”
