Points to consider when setting out the Calibration Baseline • Straight • Traffic free • Able to be ridden in both directions • Good, consistent Road Surface • Close proximity to Start/Finish • Avoid sinks/storm drains / pot holes etc • Clear of any obstructions • Consider the optimum length available; (400m recommended but not always possible)
Errors in Baseline Measurement • Temperature • Tension • Alignment • Non-standard/poor quality Tape • Miss –counting of the number of Bays • Inaccuracies in marking
Calibrated Measurement Device Remember the device consists of the Bicycle, the Jones Counter and you riding that Bicycle. Also consider anything you might be carrying.
Calibration • Remember to apply the Short Course Prevention Factor of 1m per kilometre. • In the above example multiple 5,584 ; the counts ridden by 1.001 and divide by 0.5 (the length of the Baseline in kilometres) to give a Working Constant of 11,179 counts per kilometre.
Calibration Calculations • Pre-Measurement or Working Constant • Post-Measurement or Finish Constant • Working Constant for the Day; the average of the Working & Finish constant • Note ; for your initial measurement and the setting out of the Kilometre marks you would use the Working Constant. However’ it is the Constant for the Day which should be used and therefore minor corrections will need to be applied.
Different Routes around a left-hand Turn • Note that riding to the Right of the centre of the junction you will typically measure 12m longer; hence the need to define the course before you start your measurement.
