Newspaper headlines • Be brief, precise, and impactful (short words are quickly read and fit into a small space on a newspaper) • Use punchy function words (choose verb over noun) • Use concrete, and colorful vocabulary that appeal to senses • Choose plain over fancy words • Use simple present tense for past, and infinitive for future • Leave out most structure words and articles

  5. The Language of Captions • A caption, also called a cutline, is a brief description of a picture. • Usually phrases are used to list the name(s) of people or objects in a picture • Complete sentences may be used to describe a scene.
