  1. Mr. Thomas Crapper was a plumber in the late 1800’s who held nine patents for improvements to drains, water closets, manhole covers and pipe joints.

  2. Plumbing Systems Lesson • 10th Grade Technology Class • One or Two 50 minute class periods depending on speed of students • Each student has access to their own computer with Powerpoint.

  3. Behavioral Objectives • Given a grouping of photos, the student will correctly identify 4 out of 5 plumbing tools. • Given photographs of each, correctly describe the differences between valves, fixtures, and faucets. • Given a description of a clogged drain problem, correctly describe the steps to unclog the drain.

  4. Instructions: You may work through this lesson at your own pace. Simply click on the arrows to continue or go back to the previous page. Watch for toilet buttons throughout the lesson. When you click on the toilet button, you will be able to see an example quiz question. This is where the button are located on each slide

  5. At the end of the lesson, you will complete a quiz that will be graded!! Once you are ready, just click on the photo labeled QUIZ to complete the plumbing quiz. Once you have clicked on the QUIZ button, you may NOT go back, so make sure your plumbing knowledge is up to date before you take the quiz!!

  6. Watch for underlined and italicized vocabulary words. You can find the definition of these words at the bottom of the page they are located on.

  7. Are you ready?? Just remember……….. If you forget how to use the buttons just go back to the information page by clicking on the button at the bottom of the page. Have fun and good luck!!!

  8. Here we go……………. Ready……………. Set…………………. Plumb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. What is a plumbing system? Plumbing includes all the piping and fixtures that provide water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and laundry; as well as a means of disposing of wastewater. (Yuck!)

  10. Putting in a plumbing system takes a lot of thought………………….When a house is being built, plumbers and carpenters must work together so the frame of the house is prepared for plumbing to be put in.

  11. Plumbing can be dangerous, so there are codes that must be followed in order to keep everyone safe. A code is a set of rules that can be enforced by law!!!

  12. Some Common Colds Codes • UPC (Uniform Plumbing Code) • BOCA (Basic Builders Code) • IBOC (International Conference of Building Officials) • NPC (National Plumbing Code) • SPCCI (Standard Plumbing Code) **Local codes usually adopt all or parts of the UPC or other plumbing codes. Once adopted, codes can be enforced by law!!

  13. Plumbers are SMART!!!

  14. Plumbers rely on math to make accurate measurements and calculations so all the pipes and tanks fit together to work properly.

  15. In the plumbing business, errors cost money, so you better know your stuff!!!

  16. There are 2 Types of Plumbing Systems • Water Supply System 2) Drainage, Waste, and Venting (DWV)

  17. Water Supply System • Distributes water under pressure throughout the structure for drinking, bathing, cooking, and laundry. • This is a 2 pipe system. • One pipe carries cold water, and the other hot water.

  18. DWV • Carries away wastewater and solid waste from bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries. • This subsystem is not under pressure, and must be properly vented to prevent wastewater form entering the drinking water supply.

  19. The plumbers tool belt carries many of the same tools used in carpentry and electrical work. Simple plumbing tasks only require a few tools, most commonly a wrench. While larger plumbing jobs use a variety of tools.

  20. The Plumbers Tool Belt Includes wrenches and other tools used to: • Measure • Align • Mark • Cut • Ream and Thread

  21. A Few Measuring Tools Rulers, tapes, and squares. RULER Measuring Tape T Square

  22. A Few Alignment Tools These are necessary for determining when pipes are level and plumb. Level Plumb Bob Plumb – Exactly vertical

  23. A Few Marking Tools Pencils, chalk lines, compasses, and dividers. Pencil Compass

  24. A Few Cutting Tools Various saws, files, chisels, snips, and pipe cutters. Chisel File

  25. A Few Reaming and Threading Tools Used for work on metal pipes. Reaming the end of a pipe removes the burrs caused by cutting.

  26. Wrenches Adjustable Wrench Pipe Wrench

  27. Practice Question #1 How many of these tools are used by plumbers? T Square Compass Chisel Plumb Bob Wrench Ruler Answer

  28. All of these tools are used by a plumber!!! Chisel Plumb Bob Ruler T Square Wrench Compass

  29. Different Types of Pipes • Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) • Polybutylene (PB) • Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) • Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

  30. Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) • Plastic Supply Piping • Buff colored thermoplastic • Light, easy to handle, resists cracks • Good for freezing conditions • Suitable for piping hot water • Rating of 180 degrees Fahrenheit and 100 psi

  31. Polybutylene (PB) • Plastic Supply Piping • Flexible, allowing for easy installation • Connections made with compression fittings

  32. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) • Plastic Piping • Resists chemical attack • Inexpensive • Joined with a one-step solvent

  33. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) • Plastic Piping • Has lower thermal expansion that makes long runs easier to control • Joined with a two-step primer/solvent and suitable fittings

  34. What is the difference between a valve, a fixture, and a faucet?

  35. Valves Devices that control the flow of water in the water supply system. They are installed at certain places on the lines so that water can be shut off easily.

  36. Faucets Valves that permit controlled amounts of water as needed for use in a building. They deliver water to sinks, showers, and bathtubs, but can also deliver water to a hose or bucket.

  37. Fixtures Water-using devices such as sinks, bathtubs, urinals, stools, or showers. They are attached to the plumbing system and receive water from the supply system.

  38. Quiz Practice Question #2 Are these labeled correctly??? Fixture Valve Faucet Answer

  39. No!!The correct labeling is…… Valve Faucet Fixture

  40. Plumber’s Shorthand

  41. To save time, plumbers use symbols as a type of shorthand in housing sketches to help guide plumbing installation

  42. Click on orange button below to view symbols

  43. Practice Quiz Question #3 What plumbing symbols can you find in this picture? Answer

  44. The photo is a template of symbols that are used by plumbers. It shows almost all the symbols that plumbers use today.

  45. Unclogging drains can be fun!

  46. All drains can become clogged. It is important to know different ways to unclog a drain so that you may avoid overflows or future problems!!

  47. For a slow drain……. Use chemical cleaners, such as Drano to solve the problem. Be careful, these kind of chemicals are dangerous and can make you very sick or even kill you if they are not used properly!!

  48. For more serious clogs….. You may use a plunger, a snake, or a closet auger. Plungers apply pressure to the clog Augers and snakes reach and dislodge the obstruction.

  49. Quiz Practice Question #4 What do you do if you have a slow drain, but not a clog? A. Use a plunger B. Use a liquid solvent C. Use an auger D. Do nothing, just live with the slow drain Answer

  50. The correct answer is…….. B. Use a liquid solvent, like Drano, to speed up your slow drain.
