  1. R2E Workshop Preparations RadWG Meeting March 25th

  2. Aim Of the Workshop • Update on early monitoring and calculations • Summarize known/unknown equipment sensitivities • Estimate risk of radiation induced failures for electronics over the period(s) of LHC operation • Review all mitigation options • Planning & Cost Estimates • Derive a proposal/plan to be presented to the management

  3. “Workshop Planning” • Date: June 8th – 10th • Agenda currently in preparation • List of open points (“work-packages”) summarized at: • http://r2e.web.cern.ch/R2E/R2E_Workshop.htm • RadWG Iterations: upcoming meetings dedicated to: • equipment tests, test requirements (present & future), relocation constraints, other equipment mitigation options (e.g., split of units) or new developments • it’s your responsibility to be present and contributing

  4. Where Are We? • Analysis of critical areas (calculations,…) • Early mitigation options (immediate improvements) and medium-term preparations • Equipment inventories & constraints • Early monitoring and LHC operation • Analysis of mitigation options • First proposal of options • PC Review • R2E Workshop • Long-Term proposal • Start … Next steps

  5. Input From Equipment Owners • Equipment inventories are the basis for the integration (relocation) studies • Are the lists complete/correct? -> The provided details are collected in reports to be distributed for approval -> Coordinated by G. Spiezia (e.g., Point-5 next talk) • For all critical areas, installed equipment has been ordered by priority taking into account: • Category (safety related of other) • Failure consequences (e.g., length of downtime) • Radiation sensitivity (where known) • Summary available at: http://r2e.web.cern.ch/R2E/Equipments.htm -> Please verify that it’s complete and correct -> The summary will again be distributed for approval

  6. Equipment Owners – Radiation Tests • Former tests (TCC2, …) • in case results can be used for equipment installed in critical areas (not yet tested at CNGS) – the results have to be reviewed, discussed and summarized • Past CNGS tests: • Lessons learned: reporting has to be improved (in many cases only presentations exist, as well as Daniel’s summary paper) • RP constraints followed partly at last minute • Upcoming tests: • RP related preparations more sound • Focus on equipment in critical areas (COTS mainly) • Preparation crucial due to possible high sensitivity (continuous monitoring required) • Providing an estimate about the failure probability was requested at Chamonix -> before long-term mitigation options can be started

  7. Input From Equipment Owners • Optional mitigation possibilities: • ‘Easy’ improvements (e.g., switching off access doors during LHC operation) • Procedure prepared? • Split (reconfiguration) of equipment so that most sensitive part can be brought in save areas • Minimize relocation costs, allow for early actions! • Any proposals? • New developments (e.g., ELMB++ with PH/ESE, FIP,…) • Your • requirements? • Test facilities & areas: estimate of test requirements
