  2. What are they? • Private networks that provide company information on a shared space • Extranets are a “private internet over the Internet” • Intranets are a “private version of the Internet”

  3. Extranets • Involves partners, suppliers, customers, vendors, or other businesses. • Available outside the company • Requires Security and Privacy • firewalls, server management, digital certificates, encryption, and the use of virtual private networks • Construction Industry Example

  4. Advantages • Improve organization productivity • Wal-Mart • Extranets allow organization and project information to be viewed at their convenience. • Information can be updated, revised, and corrected instantaneously.

  5. Disadvantages • Expensive to implement and maintain • Security to guard sensitive information • Reduce Personal Contact

  6. Intranets • Involves only company employees • Only available in-house • An Internet Protocol Suite is used to build the intranet • Building an Intranet is a four step process

  7. Requirements when creating an Intranet • Set up a web browser. • Set up web server access • Install user programs • Create a homepage

  8. Industry Uses • Ford Motor Company • myford.com • Peoples Republic of China (PRC) • Largest Intranet created

  9. Advantages • Improve workforce productivity • Intranet works on a “pull” basis. • Provides the tools for vertical and horizontal communication within an organization. • Web publishing enables corporate knowledge to be updated and accessed in the company using hypermedia and web technologies

  10. Disadvantages • Loss of control of submitted information • Security concerns • Information Overload

  11. Conclusion • Intranets and Extranets are being used as culture changing platforms • This will increase the ability to perform jobs faster and with more accurate information
