  2. Ethiopia • Life expectancy 51 years • HIV and malaria are problematic • 85,0000,0000 population • 80% illiteracy in the rural areas • Large orphan population • Dry season can lead to famine if the rain does not come on time.

  3. Well Established Collaboartion • We met with Finot Rotary Club in Addis Ababa • Invited by the 2007 GSE team

  4. Collaboration in Ethiopia • Eating in Ethiopia: • Remember to use only your right hand!

  5. The Year 1999 • 3,500 died during an outbreak of Malaria in an area previously not infected by mosquitos. • At the same time the HIV epidemic became known to those with education • Residents working in Addis Ababa organized to fight the epidemic • They formed the Anti Malaria Association

  6. Anti Malaria AssociationCommunity Educational Outreach • Visit remote villages with generators in the evening • Play music to attract a crowd • Show movie • Begin discussion groups, peer to peer • Find a community leader to work with the Anti Malaria association • Continue the educational process • Provide infrastructure: wells and bridges to improve quality of life and nurture relationship of collaboration • Utilize community organizational process to carry out requested projects

  7. We Traveled to Debre Mark’os Site of the Epidemic with Members of the Anti Malaria Assoc.

  8. Dangerous Streams Ethiopia has a rainy season. Modest streams become raging torrents at times.

  9. Wells & Bridges in Ethiopia During the rainy season, these streams become killers, at least for mothers carrying a sick child for treatment, or for anyone carrying goods to market.

  10. Bridge Proposal • A truss bridge, assembled by hand, provides reliable stream crossing, even in a flood • Community can provide most of ‘abutment’ cost, carrying stones to site

  11. Wells & Bridges in Ethiopia • Cost for a bridge (larger than pictured here): 31,683.34 (USD) • Community support: manhours to prepare site, provide laborers to aid in construction and to prepare ramps and approach paths are equivalent to a further 10% of cost

  12. Anti Malaria Association Project • Water challenge : Community has surface water available much of year, but from streams running thru intensely grazed pastures, thus grossly contaminated. • Clean, consistent water table is only 15 meters (less than 50 ft) down, within reach of hand dug wells. • Similar area already has a successful well (Rotary funded)

  13. Construction Cost for Three Wells • The details for one well: • Total cost 5,926.77 (USD) for materials, provided by Rotary, consisting of: pre-fab’d concrete ring well liners, cover slab, cement mix, hand pump assembly, transportation of materials, crane truck rental to install casing and cover, civil engineer to locate well & supervise • Community provides manpower for local construction work: clear site, actually dig well, bring stone for surrounding paving to site, erect fencing

  14. Three Wells & One Bridges in Ethiopia by Partnership • Ethiopia NGO: The Antimalaria Association • Finot, Ethiopia Rotary Club • Grand Island Rotary, District 7090 • Welland Rotary, District 7090 • District 7090 Designated Funds • Matching Grant From RI • Total 49,424(USD) will be raised

  15. Three Wells and a Bridge For Ethiopia • Welland and Grand Island Rotary will go club to club raising money for wells and a bridge in rural Ethiopia. Collaboration with the Finot Rotary Club of Adis Ababa • Contact Sue Dolan 905 732-6111 ext 33202 • David Johnson 716-432-9495
