Monarchy – Absolute rule by a single person • Brought to power through family or thought close to god • Aristocracy – Ruled by a small elite group • Dictatorship – Rule by a single person and close group of friends • Brought to power by overtaking government • Direct Democracy – Ruled by the people

  4. 1) Athens • a) Named after patron goddess Athena • b) Athena-goddess of war • c) Capital and largest city • d) Dominated the cultural, political, and economic life • e) Left a legacy of art, architecture, philosophy, literature, and sciences

  6. 3) Government • a) Started as a monarchy • b) Replaced by aristocracy of nobles • c) Common people had few rights • d) This led to the takeover by Draco • e) Law Code enacted in 621 B.C. • f) Solon was appointed in 594 B.C. • g) established a council, an accessibly, and law courts • h) Solon encouraged trade, reformed coinage, and brought foreign business into the city
