  1. No-stretch assembly of triple GEMs Andrey Marinov On behalf of GEM Collaboration GEMs for CMS

  2. Talk Outline • Technologies used for all the CMS prototypes • NS1 Prototype – 10x10cm • NS2 Prototype – 30x30cm • Future Plans L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  3. Assembly technologies used in CMS prototypes • Thermo stretching method • All CMS prototype s where build based on this method L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  4. “Honeycomb” GEM • Insert honeycomb spacers between GEM foils to avoid foil stretching • Similar performance level observed as for standard GEMs, but local efficiency losses due to spacers. L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  5. NS1 10x10cm Contact areas Protection resistors 10Mohms Holes for the Stretching pins L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  6. 10x10 [NS2] prototype: New mechanics GEM foil with the protection resistors Read-Out board, bottom plane Read-Out board, top plane, connector Frame for stretching Assembledin 1 hour! Placing the foil Mounting the frame and stretching Stretched GEM foil Placing the Read-Out L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  7. GEM foil tests in CO2 have been done by applying HV to each GEM and measuring the current. Nothing suspicious has been found. The drift was also tested up to 3.5kV, measured current was constant0.3nA.

  8. NS1 – 10x10cm Small prototype in the setup, connected to the gas. L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  9. L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  10. NS2 30x30cm L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  11. GEM foil Holes for the stretching L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  12. Drift plane Pins for the HV connections L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  13. NS2 30x30cm Drift electrode and the external frame L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  14. NS2 30x30cm Triple GEM frame Ready for stretching L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  15. NS2 30x30cm Stretching the GEMs L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  16. NS2 30x30cm Stretched GEMs Waiting the readout PCB to be mounted L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  17. NS2 30x30cm Status • It is under test • Gain calibration • Gain stability • Uniformity L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  18. Future Plan • After validating NS2 we would like to go for NS3 with full GE1/1 size. • We need to see the possibility the build such a detector • Mechanics • HV • Readout • Gas • …. L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek

  19. Thank you Thanks to Leszek Ropelewski Rui De Oliveira The RD51 Team L. Franconi - A. Marinov - M. Zientek
