Ellington airport

  • Established in 1917, Ellington Field was one

    of the first military airfields in the United

    States and was named after Lieutenant Eric

    Ellington, who was killed on a training mission.

  • The ATC tower was constructed in 1954.

  • NASA established Ellington Field as its base for astronaut flight training in the early 60s.

  • In 1976 Ellington Field was officially deactivated by the Air Force, however, the Texas Air National Guard, Texas Army National Guard and the US Coast Guard maintained military presence.

  • Ellington Field was acquired by the City of Houston in 1984 to use as a third civil airport and was renamed Ellington Airport on January 14, 2009.
