The Hand That was Wounded SUBJECT: Jesus Christ TITLE: The Hand That Was Wounded AIM: The hand that was wounded ,what did it give. 1) Brought compassion, mercy, and forgiveness, 2) Bled for the sins of the world, 3) Broke the bondage of sin, 4) Binds us together in brotherhood. OBJECTIVE: That each would appreciate what Jesus accomplished for us with his hands.

4. The Hand That was Wounded TEXT: Psalms 22:1-31; Focus Psalms 22:11-21 Psalms 22 along with Isaiah 53 was prophetic of the suffering of the Messiah. 2) In Psalms 22, we find in the last part of verse 16 this short sentence. "They pierced my hands and my feet.”

The Hand That was Wounded 3) When we turn to Luke 23:33 we read that it was at the place called Calvary that they crucified Jesus. 4) He was nailed to the cross by his hands and his feet. 5) Jesus hands were indeed pierced and wounded Taking that thought, let us look at the hand that was wounded for us.

6. The Hand That was Wounded Intro: Jesus Christ Both the Jewish and Christian faiths have long believed that many psalms referred as much to the promised Messiah as they did to events at the time. Because the Messiah was to be a descendant of David, it was expected that many of the royal psalms would apply to him. Christians noted how many of the passages seemed to describe in detail events from Christ’s life and death.

7. The Hand That was Wounded Almost everything that happened at the crucifixion and most of Jesus’ words during his final hours were prophesied in Psalms. The following is a short list of the main references in Psalms pertaining to Christ.

Heb. 1:5 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,   “You are my Son;  today I have become your Father”?    Or again, “I will be his Father,    and he will be my Son”?

John 19:28 (NIV) 28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”

11. The Hand That was Wounded Evil men will cast lots for his clothing: Psalms 22:18- 18 They divide my clothes among them    and cast lots for my garment. Matthew 27:35 (NIV) 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

12. The Hand That was Wounded He will declare God’s name: Psalms 22:22 - 22 I will declare your name to my people;    in the assembly I will praise you. Hebrews 2:12(NIV) 12 He says,   “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;  in the assembly I will sing your praises.”

13. The Hand That was Wounded His bones will not be broken: Psalms: 34:20 20 he protects all his bones,    not one of them will be broken. John 19:36-37 (NIV) 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”

The Hand That was Wounded Psalms 22:1-10 - Summary The Spirit of Christ, which was in the prophets, testifies in this psalm, clearly and fully, the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. We have a sorrowful complaint of God's withdrawing. This may be applied to any child of God, pressed down, overwhelmed with grief and terror.

About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,lemasabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). cf - Psalms 22:1-2- (KJV) 1My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? 2O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

16. The Hand That was Wounded We here behold the Saviour in the depth of his sorrows. No other place so well shows the grief of Christ as Calvary, and no other moment at Calvary is so full of agony as that in which his cry rends the air--"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"

17. The Hand That was Wounded No man can enter into the full meaning of these words. Some of us think at times that we could cry, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" There are seasons when the brightness of our Father's smile is eclipsed by clouds and darkness; but let us remember that God never does really forsake us. . It is only a seeming forsaking with us. In our case, our cry is often dictated by unbelief or faith.

18. The Hand That was Wounded The history of Christ's sufferings, and of his birth, explains this prophecy with Prayer for Deliverance Psalms (22:1-31) read But today I would like to discuss what that one day brought to the world through his teachings and his death.

20. The Hand That was Wounded 1. Compassion 1) Because of their spiritual condition. Matthew 9:36 "But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd."

21. The Hand That was Wounded Matthew 9:36 (NIV) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

22. The Hand That was Wounded 2) Because of their physical condition. Matthew 14:14 "And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick."

24. The Hand That was Wounded 3) In his capacity as High Priest he continues to have compassion. In Hebrewsteaches us that it was the job of the high priest to "have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way.“ - Hebrews 5:2(NIV) 2Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

25. The Hand That was Wounded 2. Mercy 1) Many often requested mercy from Jesus and it was granted. Matthew 9:27-two blind men, Matthew 15:22-demon possessed daughter, Matthew 17:15-demon possessed man. .

26. The Hand That was Wounded 2) Jesus taught us to be merciful to others Matthew 5:7-blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Matthew 12:7 -I will have mercy and not sacrifice, Matthew 23:23 -scribes and Pharisees omitted mercy, Luke 10:37-good Samaritan showed mercy.

27. The Hand That was Wounded 3. Forgiveness 1) Matthew 9:6 "But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house."

The Hand That was Wounded The Anointed Woman 2) Luke 7:47-48 "Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.“ 4. The hand that was wounded brought compassion, mercy, and forgiveness…… never to be forgotten. .

Jesus was crucified. 1) Matthew 27:35 "And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.“ Psalms 22:18 - 18They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

31. The Hand That was Wounded 2) Mark 15:25 "And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.“ 3) Luke 23:33 says, "And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left."

When Jesus was crucified, his hands and feet were nailed to the cross. 1) The method of crucifixion was brutal. 2) The soldiers would nail the victims to the cross. 3) The hands would be nailed stretched out and the feet nailed together. Psalms 22:16- 16For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

33. The Hand That was Wounded Blood indeed came forth from those wounded hands. Peter speaks of how we were redeemed with that blood. 1) 1 Peter 1:18-20, 18Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

The Hand That was Wounded 2) Hebrews 13:12 says, "Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate." 3) Colossians 1:14 says, " In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins" 4. The hand that was wounded bled for the sins of the world …... Never to be forgotten

35. The Hand That was Wounded Broke the bondage of sin

36. The Hand That was Wounded Sin captures. 1) 2 Timothy 2:25-26 teaches that sin is the snare of the devil and it captures those who commit it. 2) Hebrews 2:15 15And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

The Hand That was Wounded Sin captures. 2 Timothy 2:25-26 (NIV) 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

38. The Hand That was Wounded 3) In John 8:34, Jesus said, "Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.“ 4) 2 Peter 2:19 "for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage."

Through believing Jesus' teaching we have freedom. 1) John 8:31-32 "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." 2) John 8:36 "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."

The Hand That was Wounded 3) Romans 6:18 "Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." 4) Romans 8:2 "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.“ 3. The hand that was wounded broke the bondage of sin…. Never to be forgotten

41. The Hand That was Wounded Before we go to the next section in John 19:30, Jesus said : 30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. What did he mean by “it is Finished”

42. The Hand That was Wounded Binds us together in brotherhood.

43. The Hand That was Wounded He broke the barrier between Jews and Gentiles. Ephesians 2:13-16(NIV) 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.

44. The Hand That was Wounded There is a debate in many churches, traditional and the new more popular today.  Perhaps there is a church close by or your own church is one of them.  In these churches there are two factions. One side wishes to uphold the rich traditions of the church and that it holds dear.  The other side believes that those traditions are outdated and are unable to reach the lost and dying world that we live in today.

45. The Hand That was Wounded 2) Ephesians 2:19 "Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God." 2. He broke down social barriers. 1) Galatians 3:28-29 says, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise."

46. The Hand That was Wounded The debate with the churches quickly spins out of control and into “it’s my way is better than yours,” type of argument.  At the end of the day, the actual glorification of the Almighty is pushed to the back of everyone’s minds if not forgotten altogether. Both sides have their points.  The church is meant to worship to edify, to save the lost and to be united as one Eph 4: 1-7.  

47. The Hand That was Wounded He builds us up together as brothers and sisters in Christ. 1) Ephesians 2:20-22 "And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit."

The Hand That was Wounded TheBible instructs us to reach the lost with the message of Christ crucified for our sins.  What these two sides don’t realize is that both can be accomplished at whatGod wants us to do. Yes the methodology is different but if we are following the scriptures the argument of traditional vs. contemporary goes away. What should our focus be? God and not self, not the preacher but the scriptures and Jesus Christ.

49. The Hand That was Wounded 2) Ephesians 4:12 tells us that Jesus gave some gifts "For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ."

The Hand That was Wounded Every week the church meets and unbelievers are among us.  Some have sat in the sanctuary for years and don’t even realize that they’re still lost.  Others have wandered into the church for the first time.  Why do these people come to church? These people did not come simply to be entertained,   These people are in church in an attempt to fulfill an unsatisfied need.
