Basic Agricultural Characteristics of the Punjab State Punjab is the food basket of India producing about 20% of country’s wheat and 9% rice with 1.5% geographical area. • Total population: 27.5 million • Population in rural areas: 66% • Geographical area: 5.03 m ha • Net sown area: 4.2 m ha • Cropping intensity: 189% • Irrigated area: 97% -Through groundwater:74% • Per capita income: Rs 35,700

  9. PROGRESS OF PULSE PRODUCTION SCHEMES • All the pulse production schemes are implemented for promotion of summer moong. • Under Seed Village Scheme 100 villages shall be covered during 2011-12 for the production of quality seed. During 2010-11 the no. of villages was 64.

  10. REQUIREMENT OF ADDITIONAL FUNDS • Five units under A3P may be allocated for the promotion of summer moong for the year 2011-12 • A sum of Rs. 2.73 crore is required for this purpose.
