  2. About the Authors • Dan Kindlon, Ph.D • Professor and Researcher at Harvard Medical and Harvard School of Public Health studying child and adolescent behavior problems • Has own clinical practice • Michael Thompson, Ph.D • Middle school teacher in public schools. • High school teacher at a private school • School Counselor • Clinical psychologist on the south side of Chicago and in Cambridge, MA.

  3. What are the reasons that the authors decided to write this book? • To show us the ways that our culture limits and undermines boys emotional lives • Understand boys more and really enjoy them • A look inside boys hearts and minds

  4. What Boys Need • Recognize and accept the high activity level of boys and give them a safe place to express it. • Talk to boys in their language-in a way that honors their pride and their masculinity Be direct with them; use them as consultants and problem solvers. • Teach boys that emotional courage is courage, and that courage and empathy are the sources of real strength in life. • Use discipline to build character and conscience, not enemies • Male Role models • Teach boys that there are many ways to be a man.

  5. Raising Boys • As a mother of two boys, I especially was interested in reading this book. I definitely found this book to be extremely insightful and gave me a whole new look on the emotional well –being of my boys. Several things that stood out to me were… • How to talk to boys, you need to make them the problem solver or use them as consultants. Being patient with them as they talk they don’t express themselves in the same way as girls do. Be prepared for short answers but be willing to give them the role as the problem solver in the situation and they are more apt to offer better responses. • Boys develop slower than girls and , boys are more active and slower to develop impulse control than girls…I really should have know this… but it was nice to see it written out in a book about boys

  6. Benefits from reading this book • Getting a deeper understanding of boys and how they feel and think. • Different case studies about boys that help you understand certain situations that you may have dealt with in the past or are dealing with now. • If you are a parent of a boy or even a teacher with boy students I highly recommend this book .

  7. What other authors have to say about Raising Cain • “If you love a boy, were a boy, or care about boys and the men they become, read this book. Perfectly balancing cutting-edge science with engaging anecdotes and arrestingly useful insights, Kindlon and Thompson have written the book on boys. It is superb” - Edward M. Hallowell author of Driven to Distraction and Worry
