The UK Context • Social housing exists to provide housing at discounted rents to those who cannot afford to pay market rent. • There are 4.1 million households in social housing in the UK • 1.9m renting from Registered Providers • 2.2m renting from Local Authorities Source: Office for National Statistics • 64% of households in social rented properties receive housing benefit • 26% of households in private rented properties receive housing benefit
