4. The Yale/United Way Campaign for 2010-11Give Every Child a Chance We can address many long term problems such as homelessness, incarceration, and welfare by making sure all children have the potential for educational success.

6. Some hard truths about New Haven County • 15,907 households in the New Haven Metropolitan area have income less than $25,000/year. • The poverty level for a family of three is $18,310, and the USDA cost per year, per child is $9,927.You can do the math.

7. Hard Truths… • “Skill begets skill” for children. Economic deprivation in early childhood creates disparities in school readiness and early academic success that persist or widen over the course of childhood.3 • By 3rd grade, a child’s grades and absenteeism rates can predict with 90% accuracy whether he or she will complete high school. 3. Hard truths… • Connecticut has the nation’s largest achievement gap between poor and non-poor Children. • Investments in early childhood have a high rate of return: for every $1 invested in high-quality early childhood programs, we save $16 in costs such as special education, incarceration and welfare.

What is needed? • A focus on our most vulnerable citizens – our community’s children • Comprehensive effort, addressing all needs of the child and parents from conception through elementary school • Strong parental training and involvement • Expanded in-home as well as day care options • Full day pre-school • Enhanced and expanded after school programs including mentoring in basic skills, athletics, and play • Health care and mental health care services and support • Nutritional support in home and out of home

What is needed? • Donations and lots of them, over multiple years • The organizations needed to achieve our goals exist, but are underfunded • Many of these organizations were founded or are significantly lead by Yale University faculty, staff and students • Goal is to demonstrate statistically that we can significantly improve the overall health, welfare, and education readiness of children who live in poverty. • Will report out specific results every year for the next three years.

13. How you can support our efforts • If you haven’t given before, give now – every dollar helps • If you have given, increase your giftand/or • Consider signing up for automated donation renewal if you use payroll deduction • You can always stop anytime you want • Easier than having to remember

14. How you can support these efforts • Talk to your closest associates and ask them to join you in giving – asking a friend directly is the best way to build donations. • Volunteer – there are many agencies that really need help: New Haven Reads needs tutors for example

15. Why is Yale concentrating on kids? • Because we are an organization that never wants a student to be denied a fabulous educationbecause they don’t have the money • Education is what we do. We just want every child to have a chanceat a great education.

16. Do I have to give to the current program? • No, you may dedicate your gift to any one of the terrific partners of United Way that address many other issues. • However, if you give to United Way generally, please give to the “Give Every Child A Chance” campaign.
