  1. Natural Selection Activity

  2. Before we begin • Please get out a sheet of paper. 

  3. ON YOUR OWN… Who is the fittest lion and why?

  4. IN A GROUP… Who is the fittest lion and why?

  5. Let’s discuss! • Which lion is the fittest? • Why did we pick that lion?

  6. Write down what YOU think the answers are to the following questions • How do organisms develop fitness? • How can we define evolutionary fitness in genetic terms? • Explain why natural selection does not operate on characteristics which affect fitness but are not heritable. • Which of the following scenarios would result in natural selection: • Tyrone has heritable characteristics that increase resistance to infections and help cubs survive adulthood. • Tyrone happens to live near a farmer who puts antibiotics in meat which he leaves out for the lion cubs.

  7. WRITING TUESDAY! You are a wildlife biologist working in Africa. Another biologist makes the statement that “George was the largest lion, so he had the best chance of fighting off enemies. George must have the most evolutionary fitness.” Write a letter to your colleague either agreeing or disagreeing with him. In your letter, make sure you support your evidence from the data, from the text source, and from your own thinking.
