Salvation Army: fed the poor in soup kitchens, slum brigades 4. Florence Kelly becomes a well known advocate for change, new labor laws, work hours, help minorities

Goal #2 Promote Moral Improvement • Prohibition Movement (ban alchohol) “Alcohol is undermining American Morals!” • Women’s Christian Temperance Union used peaceful & violent means to end alcohol use • Anti-Saloon League began endorsing politicians who favored prohibition of alcohol Carrie Nation

Goal #3 Reform Practices of Big Business & Gov • Muckrakers: journalists who exposed corruption in politics and workplace, esp. big business • American Socialist Party: claims to be the alternative • Formed by Eugene V. Debs, argued both parties hurt workers 3. Anarchists: Govt created horrible conditions, need to use violence to create change

  5. Goal #4 Make Business More Efficient 1. Limit work week/hours and improve pay 2. Use science & economics to make business run more efficiently 3. Henry Ford introduces the automobile assembly line, more efficiency, cars become more affordable + bigger profits!

Goal # 5 Reform Government • Local: use a non-elected manager to run day to day city operations, elect progressive mayors & city councils • State: elect Governors who want bus. regulation like Robert La Follette of Wisconsin & James Hogg of Texas • Federal: Reform election process: • A) Ballot initiative/referendum and power to recall bad leaders • B) 17th Amendment: Direct election of Senators

  7. Women’s Rights • Women’s pay was about 1/3 of men’s pay, typical jobs incl: • Office worker – filing, secretarial • Nurse • School teacher (primary grades) • Telephone Operator • Maid, cook, seamstress (esp. African Americans) • Women demand change, incl suffrage (right to vote)

Plan for Women’s Suffrage • Convince more individual states to allow women to vote • Already in Wyoming, • Utah,Colorado & Idaho • Challenge laws in court: • 14th Amend says citizens have equal rights • 15th Amend says all citizens can vote • Aren’t women citizens? • Push for a Constitutional • Amendment

Women’s Rights Leaders • Elizabeth Cady Stanton - At Seneca Falls Convention writes Declaration of Sentiments stating “All Men & Women created equal” - Later joins Temperance movement, writes Women’s Bible 2. Susan B. Anthony -Co-founded American Women’s Suffrage Association -Fined $100 for voting in 1872
