  3. National Highway Network • National roadway network – 8,738 km • Roads per 1,000 km2 of surface area – 50 km/1,000 km2 • Roads per 1,000 inhabitants – 2.6 km/1,000 inhab. • Domestic cargo transported by highway – 95% • Domestic passengers transported by highway – 100 %

  4. National Highway Network Actions • Network coverage is generally adequate. Actions should focus on: • Substantially improve the state of repair. • Address changes in standards, increasing percentage of superior quality road surfaces. • Eliminate bridges with load limitations. • Reduce points of conflict, particularly through reducing passage through population centers.

Commercial port facilities • Montevideo is the country’s main commercial port with annual movements of 10 million metric tons, 500,000 passengers and 100 cruise ships. • The port serves: containers, general cargo, bulk items, warehouses of logistics activities, fishing, passenger transport and cruise ships. • Nueva Palmira is the second largest port. Focusing on bulk cargo and cellulose paste, the port handles 6 million metric tons annually. • Colonia is the main passenger port with 2 million passengers per year.
