  1. God Provides His Word

  2. Who Establishes Authority? • Parents? • Schools? • Government?

  3. What about in Religion? The Authority lies not in the fact that I read it, but in the fact that God wrote It. Authority in religion is VERY important… - It is impossible to maintain unity without it - Lack of unity causes Division

  4. Can We Agree on Authority? Thomas Warren – You Can Understand the Bible • In Regard to Biblical Authority, there is either a Subjective or Objective Standard • Subjective Standard – The truth of some proposition depends on the mental state of the knowing subject. • Objective Standard – Truth is Absolute; it is NOT dependant on the subjective condition of the knower. Truth has objective stability and independence outside of the knower.

  5. What are Subjective Standards? • Feelings? • Dreams or Visions? • Formal Creeds • Conscience? • Common Sense? • Sincerity? • Can one expect to be wrong religiously and still be pleasing to God?

  6. The Issue of Authority • Jesus Christ has been given all Authority Matthew 28:18-20 - “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen

  7. Jesus delegated authority to his Apostles John 13:20 - Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. • Jesus Promised the Holy Spirit John 14:26 - But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

  8. The Holy Spirit guided them to All Truth John 16:12-15 - I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

  9. The Apostles, and other Inspired Writers, have written what Christ wants Us to Know Acts 20:27 - For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God. • In the New Testament, we have what the Apostles, and the other Inspired writers, were given by the Holy Spirit. • In the New Testament, we have the Commands of the Lord Himself!

  10. The New Testament is a Complete, All-Sufficient Guide… 2 Timothy 3:16-17 - All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. Jude 3 - Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

  11. Matthew 4:4 - It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Matthew 7:21-22 - Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ John 12:48 - He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.
