  1. Epilepsy By Ashley Smith & April

  2. Patient 3 – Raymond • A woman brings her 10-year-old son, Raymond, in to see you. He’s been overly aggressive and angry lately, but she has attributed this to her divorce from Raymond’s father. Last night, Raymond attended a party at his friend’s house. After a night of laser tag and little sleep, Raymond started shaking and convulsing. He stopped before his mom arrived, but she still wanted to get him checked out. Raymond does not really remember falling to the floor, but he does remember that he smelled a very unpleasant odor right before he went down. https://www.google.com/search?q=epilepsy&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=guUhU5n2F6iy2gXS44C4DQ&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=673#q=going+to+the+doctor&tbm=isch&facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=gMnjeiuOKuFj3M%253A%3BoB-

  3. Raymond’s Symptoms • Overly aggressive and Angry feeling • Doesn’t remember falling • Very unpleasant odor • Shaking and Convulsing • Very little sleep • Was playing laser tag

  4. Different Types of Epilepsy • Focal/ Partial Seizures • Simple • Complex • Generalized • Petit Mal • Atonic • Tonic-Clonic • Myoclonic • Febrile

  5. Diagnosis • We can to the conclusion that Raymond experienced a complex Seizure caused by stress and the lights from laser tag.

  6. The Brain • Temporal Lobe • Is responsible for the smelling the unpleasant smell during the complex seizure. • Parietal Lobe • The shaking and convulsing during the seizure is controlled by the motor Cortex. • Frontal Lobe • The Cerebral Cortex in the Frontal Lobe is responsible for consciousness and Complex Seizures.

  7. Normal VS Epileptic

  8. Causes of Epilepsy • Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders • Experts often still cannot not explain exactly how or why the disease develops. • It occurs because of abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

  9. Causes of Epilepsy (continued) • Epilepsy may result from anything that disrupts the brains natural circuitry. • Examples • Stroke • Brain infection or disease • Severe head injury • Oxygen deprivation *Nearly two-thirds of people never actually find out the cause.

  10. Prognosis • Remission • Children who have Cerebral Palsy and Mental Retardation have a lower probability of remission. • Also comes along with a higher mortality rate.

  11. Treatment • Surgery • Vagus Nerve Stimulation • Medication
