ICT and Library Project • Overall objective • Increased use of ICT to enhance quality of university activities, incl. research • Realisation of a library, supporting education and research • Specific objectives • Enhance Intranet + communication • Build excellency centre for ICT and Library • Create CRC in Gilgel Gibe area VLIR-JU ICT and Library Project

ICT and Library Project • Situation at program start (2007) • In 2001 Ethiopean government installed: • Basic fiber-optic network between 30 existing buildings • Wireless connection to Addis + Internet (4 Mbps) • Several SUN-servers • HW almost outdated • E-mail mostly through external providers (hotmail, Yahoo, etc) • No other services VLIR-JU ICT and Library Project

ICT and Library Project • Activities in AP 2007 • Aug. 2007: Training 2 network-specialists at Ghent/Antwerp/Leuven • E-mail basic setup • Bandwidth management • Nov. 2007: • GIS (GRASS) training at JU (W. Buytaert) • IT-training (MySQL etc.) • Setup of prototype e-mail server for domain @ju.edu.et VLIR-JU ICT and Library Project

  7. ICT and Library Project • Activities in AP 2007 • Nov 2007: Library Automation Workshop at JU (Egbert de Smet + Piet De Keyser) • 28 participants from 14 Eth. Univ. • Weblis theory + exercises • Jan 2008: training 2 JU-librarians in Leuven/Antwerpen VLIR-JU ICT and Library Project
