  1. The Liberation of Gabriel KingK. L. Going2005nonfiction Jaelyn J 2

  2. Setting This story takes place in the summer of 1976, in a small town in Georgia. For homes, they live in trailer parks. Some are old and ragged. Some are neat and well displayed. This setting is important and adds meaning to the story, because it allows the reader to visualizewhat type of lifestyle they live and how their lifestyle could affect the character. If the setting were different, the reader wouldn’t be able to visualize where the character lives and how they live.

  3. Characters

  4. Conflict • Gabriel and Frita are moving up to the fifth grade, but Gabe is scared of two boys and just about everything that has to do with the fifth grade. Frita is exited for 5th grade and wants Gabe to go with her. • Man v Society Man v Man

  5. Summary of Plot • Its moving up day, and Gabriel and Frita are moving up to the 5th grade. Gabe has a list of fears, and so does Frita. Gabriel is scared of spiders, 5th grade, loose cows, and much more. Frita’s has less things on her list. She’s the only African American at her school, and she has an enemy that’s threatens her. Frita and Gabriel uses their whole summer to overcome their fears.

  6. Theme • Hard work pays off. • Text Evidence 1: Frita and Gabriel went to the muddy swamp, so Frita can catch a spider for Gabriel. The spider landed on Gabe and Frita put it in the jar. (p 43-44) Frita told Gabriel to keep him as a pet, and eventually Gabriel befriended the spider, and named it Jimmy. • Text Evidence 2: Gabriel made ice cream for Frita’s fear. He put chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and brussel sprouts in it, so Frita wouldn’t be scared of them anymore. After she took a couple of bites, she really liked it. • Text Evidence 3: Frita was scared of Mr. Evans and his threats, so Gabe’s and Frita’sparents come together and say a speech at the rally about liberation. At the rally she wasn’t scared of Mr. Evans, his son, or his threats,

  7. Point of View • The point of view of this story is 1st person. It helps the reader understand that the character is talking, not the narrator. If the author choose a different point of view, the reader wouldn’t be able to feel or know the emotion of the character from their point of view.

  8. Symbolism • The spider in the jar symbolizes this story. It symbolizes this story, because It shows that you can be afraid of something and not want to do anything new. ( Stay hidden and locked up). It also represents that if you overcome those fears, u can express yourself and do more things. (Get set free and live your life).

  9. Recommendation • I recommended this book, because it shows how two very different people can come together and love each other no matter what they look like or who they are. I also recommended this book, because it shows how you can have a bunch of fears, but if u work hard, you will eventually overcome those fears.
