  4. Lincoln’s Dream: “There seemed a death-like stillness about me. I heard quiet sobs, as if a number of people were weeping…I went from room to room; not a living person was in sight, but the same mournful sounds followed me…I kept on until I arrived at the East Room. There, I had a sickening surprise. Before me was a coffin, on which rested a corpse. People stood around, gazing mournfully and weeping pitifully. ‘Who is dead in the White House?’ I asked. ‘The President,’ was the answer, ‘he was killed by an assassin!’”
