Dua-E-Qunoot for Witr

The word Qunut blankly means “being devoted” or “the act of standing” if we go with the Classical Arabic whereas Dua is an Arabic word for supplication. Qunoot jointly has got lots of philological meanings like- modesty, obligation & adoration. But basically Dua-E-Qunoot is considered as a special type of dua which should be recited in the last Rak’ah of Witr prayer in Isha. This special Dua has some history of its own. Ahmad, Muhammad ibn Isa at-Tirmidhi, and Abu Dawood mark that Hasan ibn Ali learned the petition from Muhammad (S.A.W). Dawood also affixed that Muhammad (S.A.W) used to recur Du’a Qunoot whenever a difficult situation or mishap would come in front of the Muslims. Ibn Ali quoted that the prophet introduced him with the Dua & suggested him to recite Qunoot during the last Rak’ah of witr prayer. Our beloved prophet used to declaim Du’a E Qunoot during the Salat-Al-Fajr, Witr and also in other prayers Omni the year. Many Muslim people do not actually recite Qunoot in Salat-Al-Fajr or in other prayers except witr prayer, it is a prophetic tradition but not obligatory and that’s why Muslims only pronounce the Du’a in witr prayer. There is a little confusion on when to peruse the Dua, is it before or after the Ruku? Well, at Masjid Al Haram & Mecca everyone narrates Dua Qunoot after getting up from the Ruku whereas according to Hanafi opinion one is supposed to recite Dua-e-Qunoot before going into Ruku. But in Hadith, It is permissible that one can read the Qunoot before or after the Ruku by his/her wish. There is a Hadith related to Ibn Majah and Muhammad ibn Nasr- that we can perform it both ways. And this Hadith found faultless by Fath al-Bari & Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani. Du'a qunoot is advised to be recurred in the Witr prayer. According to Imam Abu Hanifah Witr prayer is wajib (obligation). The other Imams weigh the Witr prayer as Sunnah Mu'akkada. It can be performed after the Isha prayer. The minority Ibadi form of Islam refuse the practice of qunūt.
