  1. Safety Culture in DSL and DoF Abigail Licnikas Ed Akerley

  2. “Culture??” • What is it? • A set of shared values and behaviors from all levels • The way people act in carrying out their duties • What is it NOT? • A policy, program, or procedure • Why is it important?

  3. Safety Perception Survey • Set of questions that reflect the attitudes of employees • Gives us a baseline of where to start making improvements (beyond inspection findings) and where the strengths are • Find gaps between management and staff (knowledge, perceptions, etc)

  4. Why are we doing this? • Non EHS/lab staff have not been polled before • Injury data suggest that it’s time to take a closer look at how work is being done • Empower all employees/stakeholders with a voice for their personal safety and the safety of their co-workers. • Provide employees with the tools to make positive change.

  5. The process so far… • Getting final OK for language in the survey • Originally very company/production oriented • Union staff • More concern from those supervising • Need to sell to staff as a way to have a voice
