  1. Lexiles A Brief Tour of the Tools and Resources Available at www.lexile.com

  2. What is the Lexile Framework? • a text measurement scale, from 200L (beginning) to 1700L (advanced) • breaks text into 125-word sections to evaluate semantic difficulty and syntactic complexity • tens of thousands of books and tens of millions of articles from periodicals, newspapers, reference books and transcripts have already been given Lexile measurements

  3. How can a Lexile score help students? • Many testing companies (like NWEA) and states are able to provide a Lexile range of each student. • Students’ scores can align students to texts where they are expected to have 75-percent comprehension. • The Lexile Framework is designed to match a student’s reading ability with a text's readability for optimal reading success and enjoyment.

  4. Does Lexile translate to grade level? • The Lexile system recognizes that a grade level will encompass a range of ability, so it does not offer an exact translation. • See chart on FAQ page of www.lexile.com for approximate translation, or check The Lexile Framework for Reading (see Lexile Map link).

  5. Tools to Connect Students to Texts • Book Search by author, title, ISBN, key word, or Lexile score • Lexile Calculator • Lexile Analyzer • Lexile Reading Pathfinder • The Lexile Framework for Reading • EBSCO databases (available at Maine Databases)

  6. Summary • NWEA testing has provided Lexile scores for all grades 7-10 students. • Lexile measurements for content area textbooks or trade books are available at www.lexile.com. • Teachers can access the site for help in assessing students’ ability to read classroom texts. • Teachers can look for alternative texts through the Book Search feature or check EBSCO databases for related readings.
