  1. The Y-Intercept Case File Special Report

  2. Problem Solvers Inc. • PSI has been engaged to locate a highly covert operative commonly known as “The Y-Intercept.”

  3. Photographic Identification • This is the most recent photo available of the Y-Intercept which has been enlarged to show detail: Y-Intercept ·

  4. Common Disguises • Y-Intercept has been known to disguise his appearance as evidenced by these snapshots: . . . .

  5. Known Hangouts • The Y-intercept can only be positively identified when in very specific locations… • On a graph, or • In an equation of a line

  6. Common Aliases • Legal Name : “Y-Intercept” • Sometimes referred to by his coordinates (x,y) • His x coordinate is always zero • “Big C” • “Li’l b”

  7. The Y-Intercept on a Graph • The Y-Intercept can always be found lounging along a yaxis whether he is on a line or a parabola

  8. The Y-Intercept in an Equation • A favorite hiding place of the Y-Intercept is in an equation of a line or of a parabola. • Y-Intercept is frequently found in a coordinate pair with his BFF zero. (The zero is always the first coordinate.) • Whether linear or quadratic, being a clever spy, the y-intercept always hides in the last place you would look.

  9. Hidden in Equations Alias: “Big C” • Standard Form Linear Equation Ax + By = C • Slope Intercept Form of a Linear Equation y = mx + b • Standard Form Quadratic Equation Ax² + Bx + C = 0 To avoid detection, he goes by several aliases designed to confuse his enemies. (He likes to hide in equations with y’s in them both because he is vain and because anyone who hasn’t taken Ms. K’s Algebra 2 class might think that is him!) CVV CVV Alias: “Li’l b” CVV Alias: “Big C”

  10. Locate Y-Intercept . . Y-Intercept is (0,-7) Y-Intercept is (0,4)

  11. Deep Cover • The only way to discover a Y-Intercept in “deep cover” is to use your Superior Algebra Skills to bring him down. • The Y-Intercept is in deepest cover when in an equation that is not already in standard form or slope-intercept form.

  12. Your Options • Put the equation in standard form or slope intercept form using additive or multiplicative inverses, or Example: – y = 2x + 7 y = -2x - 7 • Go in manually by setting the x = to zero, and solving for y. Example: 4x = 2y + 1 4(0) = 2y + 1 0 = 2y + 1 -1 -1 -1 = 2y 2 2 -1/2 = y The Y-Intercept is the value of y when x = 0

  13. Locate Y-Intercept (0,9) (5,0) (5,9) . . Y-Intercept is (0,2) Y-Intercept is (0,1)

  14. Locate Y-Intercept (-7,-7) (0,-7) (-7,0) . Vertical Lines have no Y-Intercept Y-Intercept is (0,-7)

  15. Locate Y-Intercept (2,4) (2,0) . . (0,-1) Y-Intercept is (0,-6) Y-Intercept is (0,2)

  16. Locate Y-Intercept (1,1) (3,0) (0,3) . . Y-Intercept is (0,10) Y-Intercept is (0,0)
