  12. החוקרים חלוקים בדעתם לגבי השאלה האם מגילת אסתר היא אמינה מבחינה היסטורית, או שאין היא אלא סמל לשנאת ישראל בגלותם והשגחת האל עליהם. המצדדים באמינותה ההיסטורית מצביעים על כך שפרטים רבים במגילה מלמדים על היכרות אינטימית של המחבר עם ההווי הפרסי, ועל פרטים שונים העולים בקנה אחד עם מסורות ותעודות פרסיות. השוללים מצביעים על היעדרו של הסיפור כפי שהוא מהכרוניקות הפרסיות ותיאורי ההיסטוריונים היווניים שבידינו (המצדדים, מבחינתם, סבורים שהיה זה אירוע משמעותי רק ליהודים), על סתירות בין המסופר במגילה לבין הידוע לנו על הנהגים אצל הפרסים (כגון החוק השולל מהמלך אפשרות נשיאת אישה שאינה בת פרס), או על סתירות הגיוניות קלות. כמובן, קיימות גם דעות ביניים, המצדיקות את קיומו של הסיפור בכללו, אך לא של כל הפרטים שבו.
