  5. Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC) • Conserve energy & materials; • Reduce priority chemicals at all product life cycle stages; and • Prevent pollution and promote recycling & reuse. • Goal: Achieve national 35% recycling rate for municipal solid waste by 2008

  6. The Three Pronged Approach Targets or Promotes Waste Reduction • Waste prevention • Recycling • Purchasing and manufacturing recycled-content products

  7. Waste Stream Targets • Organic Materials • Paper • Construction & Demolition Debris • Electronics • Coal Combustion Products • Foundry Sand

  12. Cost savings • Reduce disposal costs • Purchasing savings • Recycling revenue • Technical Assistance • Individual attention • Quick turnaround • EPA Recognition • Awards • Case studies • Climate Profile • Environmental Benefits • Waste reduction benefits • Climate benefits (greenhouse gas emission reductions)

  13. Cost Savings: Partner Examples L.A. Unified School District saved $3 million in 2005 by: “recapping” school bus tires and practicing an “Offer Versus Serve” program in school cafeterias. Guardian Automotive’s Ligonier Plant has saved $1.3 million since joining WasteWise. In 2005, the plant saved more than $360,000 by: recycling all unused glass cullet for bead blasting, fiberglass, or reflective paint for highways.

  14. Recognition • Annual conference and awards ceremony. • Case studies, articles, and web site success story features.

  15. Technical Assistance Resources • WasteWise Web Site • eBulletin

  16. Technical Assistance Resources (cont.) • WasteWise Helpline & Technical Assistance Team • Publications

  17. The Climate/Waste Connection • Every stage of a product’s life cycle impacts climate change. • Using natural resources and energy releases GHGs. • WasteWise’s Climate Campaign helps organizations reduce their impact on global climate change.

  18. Individualized Climate Profile

  19. GHG Emission Reductions: Partner Examples Recycled 7 tons of books. Reduced GHG emissions by 6 MTCE = 50 barrels of crude oil. Recycled 813 tons of plastic. Reduced GHG emissions by 312 MTCE = 8,000 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.

  20. Who Can Join? • Any type of organization is encouraged to join. • Registration is simple —and can be completed online or via hard copy.
