  1. Parent Presentation October 9, 2013

  2. Agenda • GradeConnect • New handbook highlights • Security and crisis management

  3. GradeConnect • The faculty has been making this transition for nearly 18 months. • Serves to make the reporting process function much more smoothly. • Allows you the opportunity to review student performance at any time.

  4. What remains the same? • Tests are still being sent home for you to review with your child. • Grading rubrics remain the same. • You still have the ability to communicate with the teacher when the need arises.

  5. What has changed? • You have the ability to see the scope of academic performance at all times. • There is no longer a need for interims to be sent home at the trimester mid-point. • You will receive a warning notice if your child is in danger of failing, under performing or is experiencing a behavioral issue.

  6. What else can you expect in the future? • Email announcements from the teachers. • More detailed report card comments and observations provided by the teachers.

  7. The SKD Handbook • Life under two handbooks. There was a need for norms to develop that suit our blended community. • SKD Discipline Policy – January • The way SKD does things…it is in writing now!

  8. Where is it located? • Go to the school website. • Look for the handbook icon and links in three locations on the home page.

  9. Consequences • Utilization of the discipline policy as established last January. • Additional documentation of dress code violations. • Supervised lunch detentions.

  10. Your homework • Read each section of the handbook thoroughly. • Click on each link to other related website and/or form. • Download and print the handbook agreement form. Sign it and return it by October 14th.

  11. Security and crisis management at SKD • December 2012 – A personal paradigm shift. • Conducted an immediate needs assessment. • Sought the advice of experts. • “Shut the place down.”

  12. Needs assessment • Abundantly clear that several things had to change. • Revisit the crisis management plans. • Make some changes to the physical plant.

  13. Tasks • Formed faculty committees to create new drill procedures. • Developed and fine tuned safety procedures. • Raised money to make many of the changes we needed. • Executed the plan over the summer.

  14. Safety procedures • Constantly attending to and making adjustments to daily procedures. • Making school security part of our daily conversation. • Preparing and executing safety drills with the students.

  15. The drills • Fire • Internal lockdown • Weather • Evacuation with shelter in place • Evacuation with rally points • Others – Bomb threat and chemical leaks

  16. Conversations with the children • Keep it age appropriate. • Think it through. How will you answer the questions they may ask? • Know that some children are more sensitive than others.

  17. My words to you, the children, teachers and myself • We are safe in our school. However, we need to know what to do if there is an emergency. • We are prepared. If something bad were to happen we would know what to do.
