  2. LEED's History • USGBC was created in 1993 • LEED pilot rating system was released in 1998 • LEED has emerged as the most respected rating system • USGBC holds an annual convention

  3. Why Should I Care? • Tax Incentives • Free Publicity • It is the “Cool” thing to do • You have to… • Respect in the community • Being Responsible • Health Reasons • Lease Faster • Retain Employees • And many more…

  4. Who uses LEED? • Starts with the Owner • Design Team • Construction Team • Consultants (i.e. Engineers, Landscape Architects) • Gov’t Officials • Real Estate/Marketing Teams • Facility Managers • Manufactures • And anyone looking to make some money off of this growing practice

  5. So, what does LEED consist of? • Six Sections: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovative Design • There are Prerequisites, Credits, along with Exemplary Performance • 7 Required Prerequisites

  6. The Point System • There are four Certification awards • Certified 26 – 32 • Silver 33 – 38 • Gold 39 – 51 • Platinum 52 - 69

  7. Does it Cost Extra? • Yes • Well is it worth it then? • USGBC says, Yes • Costs are from up-front costs, but will pay for itself • The LEED process also costs… • What would “Green” Construction be without the more important Green

  8. What are the Benefits? • Occupant Health • Occupant Productivity • Lower Energy Costs • Environmental Impact • Money, Payback • Building Lifecycle • Happy People • Knowing you are making an impact

LEED AP • Anyone may become a LEED AP • Around 50,000 people have passed their accreditation exam • Must pass an accreditation exam • When you do, you get to put LEED AP at the end of your name… Sweet • Knowledgeable of the whole project process • The exam program transitioned to Green Building Certification Institute, in 2008
