  1. Fractions and Division Lesson 9-2 Power Point made by: Jennifer Allen

  2. Purpose You have already learned how to represent parts of a whole with a fraction. Today you will learn how fractions are related to division.

  3. Connect Can 3 people share 2 things equally? Yes, if the wholes are divided into equal parts

  4. Problem How can you divide 2 muffins among 3 people equally? What fraction shows the part of 1 muffin each person gets? Draw pictures to show your answers. (There is more than one correct way!)

  5. Use Drawings! Draw 2 equal-sized circles on a piece of paper. Each circle will represent a muffin. Divide each circle into 3 equal parts.

  6. 3 How many parts does each muffin have? How many parts will each person get?

  7. 2 How many parts will each person get?

  8. So, how much of a muffin does each person get? Each person will get 2/3 of a muffin.

  9. You can also write this by thinking of division. Dividing 2 muffins for 3 people is the same as saying 2 ÷ 3. 2 ÷ 3 = Saying 2 ÷ 3 is the same as saying two-thirds. When you see the line of a fraction, it means “divided by.”

  10. How can you use a number line to represent fractions? One way to find a point on a number line that represents a fraction is to divide a unit segment (0 to 1) into equal parts. To find ,divide the segment into 5 equal parts.
