  3. High blood glucose (sugar) level • Reason: • Glucose levels build up in the blood when insulin is not present or is ineffective

  4. What is diabetes? • Diabetes occurs if • pancreas does not make enough insulin • or the insulin produced is ineffective • or a combination of both

  5. Type 1 diabetes • No insulin produced • Destruction of insulin producing cells • Usually before the age of 40 • Symptoms develop quickly (few weeks)

  6. Type 2 diabetes • Insulin Resistance • Usually appears after the age of 40 • Usually in overweight or obese people • Runs in families • Symptoms develop slowly (years)

  7. Age > 40 • Have a family history of Diabetes • Overweight or obese • High BP, heart disease • Borderline high blood glucose test • Women with history of GDM • Minority ethnic groups

  8. Approximately 10% of NHS budget is spent in diabetes care • This is equivalent to 9 billion/year based on 2007-8 NHS budget • Diabetes prescriping now account for 8.4% of all NHS prescription cost

  9. Multi-factorial approach: • Optimal control of risk factors: • Optimal blood glucose control • Optimal weight control • Optimal blood pressure control • Optimal control of cholesterol • Structural education and lifestyle changes
