  3. Goal of Roundtable • To commence the interrogation of our roles in policy-making and implementation as a first step towards helping responsible policy making and implementation. • To promote public accountability. • To start a movement for the evaluation of our development. Florence Etta

  7. A New Model for Policy Making? • Yes and Why? • Development failures have come from Policy failures; • Listen to Soludo et al., Olukoshi and Soludo & Mkandawire, Ikiara et al. (See Handouts). Florence Etta

  8. The Policy Process • What is this process? • Agenda setting • Policy Compilation • Policy Implementation • Policy Evaluation/Assessment/Review • Who is involved? • How? • To what effect/what are the outcomes of this involvement? Florence Etta

  9. What to Do? • According to Soludo et al, • Study and understand the process • Interrogate and illuminate past failures • Different groups of participating stakeholders • need to be helped to: • “know their roles and to play these responsibly” Florence Etta

Group work • Select/identify a policy that you have been personally been involved in i.e. name it. • Group the results and then form a few policy themes. • Group individuals around these policy themes • Each group, discusses and evaluates their members’ participation in the policy making and how they would change it i.e. make participation and the policy outcomes better and how they would continue to contribute to monitoring that policy. • Present three 3 reasonable and feasible actions that your group recommends to SAMEA to promote the evaluation of OUR development.
