  5. Public Health Returns to the Local Authority 2013 Key Drivers An opportunity to change the focus from treating sickness to actively promoting health and wellbeing

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) 2012 Demonstrates how the planning system can play an important role in promoting healthy communities, leading to reductions in health inequalities, better access to healthy food, reduced obesity, more physical activity, better mental health and wellbeing, and improved air quality.

North Tyneside Local Plan Establishes a framework for sustainable development in the Borough up to 2032 Sets out the policies and proposals to guide planning decisions Covers wider range of policy matters, including: • The homes and jobs needed in the Borough • Retail, leisure and other commercial development • Infrastructure provision for transport, telecommunications, waste management, flood risk etc • Provision of health facilities, community infrastructure etc • Conservation and enhancement of the natural, built and historic environment

Creating Healthy Places Workshop Objectives:- • Communicate a vision for Killingworth Moor and Murton Gap • Highlight evidence and good practice in planning for health • Identify and explore design features of environments which can contribute to health and wellbeing • Explore opportunities for further partnership working between housing, planning, health, adult social care and others in the future

Healthy Design Principles / priorities… Social and community service hub, potentially comprising co-located health services, village hall and other potential services Inclusive estate wide design –toilets, benches, pavements, crossings, signage, lighting etc. Pedestrian prioritisation – reduced speed zones, car free zones, parking control, reduced car parking provision etc Green space for multiple use – community gardens, allotments, sensory gardens, play spaces, outdoor sports/leisure space etc Healthy and inclusive housing design – lifetime homes standards, dementia friendly design, technology etc
