  1. Learner Voice at The Causeway School

  2. How it was before! • Each Tutor group voted two students onto the Year Council • Heads of Year met and chaired their Year Council Meeting. • Two students from each year attended School Council chaired by the Deputy Head and attended by the Chair of Governors.

  3. Topics discussed • Toilets • Canteen and food • School clubs • Uniform • Buddy system All very admirable but few changes made and students felt little empowerment.

  4. How to improve • 4 students attended a Student Council Conference in London.

  5. Behaviour Panel • This was the idea we were going to start with and develop.

  6. Learner Voice Conference • 17th July 2008 Sally-Ann came to school and led 20 students through a day of training. • We have brought some of our thoughts to show you. • We used the “wheel” to help us decide where we are and where we want to go.

  7. Support • The Chair of Governors came to see how we were doing and joined in with our discussions • We had biscuits, sweets and lunch provided out of the £1000 budget that has been given to us.

  8. The New Structure • A small group of students met to put the final touches to the structure and to decide how to manage and lead the new groups.

  10. Community Groups • These are the groups that will set about planning for change. • These are the groups who will monitor what is happening in school. • These are the groups to speak out on behalf of the students. • These are the groups who will make things happen.

  11. Youth Forum • Three year 11 students have become involved locally. • They aim to find out what local youngsters want and work with Eastbourne Borough Council to try and provide out of school activities.

  12. Young Pioneers • 10 students from all years have put themselves forward to work as Young Pioneers. • This involves having a say in what services are available to children in East Sussex.

  13. Rotary Leadership • Two students went for a weekend sponsored by The Rotary to develop their leadership skills. • These are all examples of the snowball effect following on from the Learner Voice training.

  14. Where are we now? • Lots of students involved in leadership, training and having a say in what goes on for young people. • Notice boards to communicate and lots of plans to improve communication for young people. • Restructured system. • Less reliance on teachers.

  15. Loads still to do! • We have started the process….
