Ford • besides dealing with the fallout from Watergate, Ford faced tough economic problems which were exasperated by the results of large Democratic gains in the 1974 midterm elections (43 + in the House & 3 + Senate) • Ford vetoed more bills than any other president as he tried to curb inflation; most were social welfare bills (66 total but many were overridden)

  6. he issued WIN buttons to try and to motivate the nation in whipping inflation now • Ford pushed for tax cuts and spending cuts; he got only the former and the nation went into a deeper recession • Failed to improve economy- consumer demand dropped and unemployment skyrocketed.

Assassination Attempts • escaped assassination attempt Sept. 5, 1975, in Sacramento, Calif., by Lynette Alice (Squeaky) Fromme, who pointed but did not fire .45-caliber pistol • escaped assassination attempt in San Francisco, Calif., Sept. 22, 1975, by Sara Jane Moore, who fired one shot from a .38-caliber pistol that was deflected

  10. Foreign Poicy • Mayaguez Incident- Cargo ship was taken by Khmer Rouge (Cambodian Pirates). • Ford order two air strikes and sent special forces to rescue the crew (41 men) • 41 members of the rescue team were killed. • Embarrassment for the Ford

  11. 1976 Presidential Election • Presidential Election of 1976 pitted Ford and Bob Dole for the Republicans • a Washington outsider who was peanut farmer from Georgia named Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale ran as the Democratic nominees • Carter won a close election that was decided by sections
