  3. 1. Where is the best place for a car seat? • Center of the back seat of the car ***NEVER leave a child alone in the car no matter the age!!!

Three Types of Car Seats • Infants – Infant seat from birth to approx 20 lbsand 12 months • Toddler – Convertible seat from 20 lbs and 12 months until about 40 lbs and 4 years old • Preschooler - Booster Seat from about 40 lbs and 4 years old until about 8years old, 80 pounds and 4ft 9” tall

  6. 2. Why do kids receive immunizations? • To prevent communicable diseases from being passed on to others

  7. a. What are communicable diseases? • Diseases that can be passed to other people. • Examples: – Polio – Chicken pox – Hepatitis A and B – Rubella

  8. b. Immunizations • Polio • DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis – whooping cough, and Tetanus) • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella – German measles) • HIB • Hepatitis B • Chicken Pox

  10. c. Common Reactions to Immunizations • Explain common reactions that children may have to the immunization shots. – Fever – Cranky – Red bumps

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) What is Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) and how can it happen? • Jostling an infant back and forth with enough force that brain tissue moves inside the skull and becomes damaged (Playing horsey ride and tossing the kid up in the air can all cause shaken baby syndromeif there is enough force)

  14. Why? • The brain rotates within the skull cavity, injuring or destroying brain tissue. Babies brains are immature and easily injured by shaking • When shaking occurs, blood vessels feeding the brain can be torn, leading to bleeding around the brain. • • Blood pools within the skull, sometimes creating more pressure within the skull and possibly causing additional brain damage. • Retinal (back of the eye) bleeding is very common

  15. a. What are some effects of SBS on a child? • Cause brain damage. • Severe shaking can cause possible death.

  16. 5. What is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)? • Sudden unexplained death of an apparently healthy child ***Generally occurs in the first year of life.

  17. a. Prevention strategies? • Have infant sleep on back *most recommended. • No stuffed animals or soft bedding. • Do not smoke or be around smokers

  18. 7. Bathing • Never leave the baby • Support the head • Wash the diaper area (dirtiest area) LAST • Use a washcloth to rinse the hair • No need for special soaps • No need to wash daily • Wait to bathe until the umbilical cord has fallen off • Have all supplies right next to you

Dressing and Diapering • Dressing: • Support baby on your lap • Stretch the garment neckline and pull it over your baby’s head • Use our fingers to keep it form catching • Don’t try to push your baby’s arm through the sleeve, put your hand into the sleeve from the outside, grasp your baby’s hand, pull it through • Diapering: • Wipe baby from front to back (never wipe from back to front – especially in girls – Urinary tract infections) • Can lift legs by ankles to get better teach

Toy Safety Guidelines • Age appropriate • Use non-toxic paint • Make sure sturdy construction and working parts • Children under 3 should avoid toys that are small or have small parts that can be swallowed (choking) • Clean toys regularly • GENERAL RULE: if it fits in a toilet paper tube, it is too small for them

Childproofing Guidelines • Allow the child to have freedom to explore and opportunities to develop in all 5 areas by Childproofing the house before the child learns how to C R A W L. • Guidelines: • Keep children away from candles, fireplaces, stovetops, and anything HOT • Set water temperature to 110-120 degrees F • Place all poisonous substances and medications high on a shelf and locked up • Keep floors/stairs free of clutter to prevent fall (safety gates) • Place caps over electrical outlets, cords out of reach • Screens and safety latches on windows

Crib Safety • Should be safest place! • Meets all federal safety standards • Only use a crib mattress • Secure all hardware and make sure there are no loose, broken, or missing parts • No more than 2 3/8” in-between slats (dollar bill height) • Keep away from windows • Don’t use soft bedding • Don’t put baby monitor in crib • ALWAYS put baby to sleep on back

Safety Precautions • *NEVER leave baby alone! • High Chairs, Swings • Use safety straps to keep child from slipping down • Make sure chair cannot be tipped over (not by an object child could grab) • Don’t allow child to stand • Walker – • Make sure not by stairs (or there is a gate) • Don’t allow child to stand • Sanitary (toys attached)
