  1. Purpose: to promote and enhance biomedical research in Arkansas Focus: Undergraduate institutions

  2. INBRE Outreach Core Purposes: 1) to provide fellowships and research opportunities to undergraduate faculty and students at the INBRE Lead Institutions 2) to offer networking through an instate Annual Scientific Research Symposium

  3. INBRE Outreach Core Core Director, R. Koeppe, PhD, UAF Summer Research Fellowships • For undergraduate faculty & students • 6 faculty research fellowships 2003 Summer Students • 16 student research fellowships • 10-week summer program, May - July • Research conducted in a state-of-the-art lab at one of the lead institutions • Research Day for student posters and faculty talks at end of program Annual Research Symposium • University of Arkansas, Fayetteville • Open to undergraduate science/math majors & faculty • Every fall – Next one: October 15-16, 2010

PSC Mentored Student Fellowships • Students select a research lab • at a Lead Institution (UAMS, UALR, UArk) • Arkansas INBRE provides: • Stipend • Housing/Travel Allowance • Research Supply Budget • Students agree to: • Present a poster at Arkansas INBRE Research Day • Prepare a research paper JBU ASU Lyon ATU UAF Hendrix UAMS UCA UALR UAPB HSU OBU UAM SAU

  5. Contributing to the Pipeline Arkansas INBRE Outcomes for Student Fellows in Last 5 Years

  6. Contributing to the Pipeline Arkansas INBRE Outcomes for Undergraduate Researchers in Last 5 Years

  7. Mentored Faculty Fellowships JBU ASU Lyon ATU Hendrix Harding Summer & Academic-Year Fellowships UCA • Faculty & Mentor prepare a proposal • Arkansas INBRE provides: • Stipend • Housing/Travel Allowance • Research Supply Budget • Faculty agree to: • Build long-term relationship with mentor • Continue research in future years • Involve undergraduate students in research UAPB OBU HSU

Increased Research Funding To Undergraduate Faculty • Extramural Research Funding to INBRE Faculty Fellows • In last 5 years: 4 NSF grants, 5 R15, 1 R03, 1 USDA grant • Some extramural funding directly to prior INBRE Fellows • e.g., NIH R15 (AREA) grant to Tim Lindblom (Lyon College) • - renewed 2010 • NSF grant to Andrea Duina (Hendrix College) - renewed 2010 • USDA grant to John David Swanson (Univ of Central Arkansas) • Some Fellows become Project Leaders and then obtain • extramural funding • e.g., NSF grants to Barbara Clancy (Univ of Central Arkansas)
