  1. Research discussions March 21st 2013

  2. Case study 1 • Corpus-based English Engineering Materials • Dougal

  3. Case study 2 • Elite language • Pattamawan

  4. Case study 3 • Characterising researchers • Richard

  5. Characterising teachers • Katz (1996) investigated the teaching style of 4 teachers • She characterised the teaching styles as • Earth mother • Choreographer • Entertainer • Professor

  6. Characterising researchers • In my research about how people choose where to publish, there are clear patterns for different researchers • I want one to three-word phrases to characterise the researchers similar to Katz’s terms

  7. Characterising researchers • A: Follows suggestions of colleagues in deciding which conferences to send proposals to and which journals to submit to • B: Has very different strategies depending on whether the publication is at a conference or in a journal

  8. Characterising researchers • C: Constantly tries to steadily increase the quality of place of publication (i.e. start with non-refereed national journal, move to refereed national journal etc.) • D: Focuses primarily on the match between the topic of the place of publication and the topic of the research without worrying much about quality

  9. Characterising researchers • E: Focuses on conducting research; publishing is serendipitous with no real plans • F: Focuses on who reads journal/attends conference so that research is targetted at the audience
