  4. Women as Nurses • Nursing was the most common way women contributed in WWI • Many of them were volunteers • Hundreds of thousands served • Thousands died in action

Famous Nurses • Edith Cavell: British nurse • Caught behind enemy lines when Germans invade Belgium • Could have escaped, but sets up hospital • she helps wounded soldiers and smuggles them out of the country • "I can’t stop while there are lives to be saved“ • 1915 captured by Germans and executed

  6. Women in Disguise • Many women wanted to do more • Dorothy Lawrence: disguised herself as a man to join the English Army • Flora Sandes: British nurse that joined the Serbian army • First woman to become an officer in the military • “nearly mad with joy” at being able to fight • Won several medals for valor • MilunkaSavić: Serbian war heroine, most decorated female soldier of all time

Women in Action • Russia only country to actively use women as soldiers in combat • Women’s Battalion of Death: Elite Russian military units • Called into action against Germans in 1917 • Pushed past THREE German trenches before finally forced back • 13,000 Women joined US Navy and Marines • Didn’t see any combat

  8. Women in the Air • Eugenie Shakhovskaya: Russian Princess becomes first ever female combat pilot • Flew Reconnaissance missions for Russia • Shot down behind enemy lines, executed by firing squad
