Collectivization • farmers live/work together in HUGE collectives • Soviet gov’t sets quotas: • (5000 pounds of grain) • food is shipped off to factories to feed workers making steel • IN THEORY: collectives can sell extra food for money • PROBLEM: quotas SO high, no one can meet it • punishment: gov’t confiscates property / sends people to gulags

Holodomor (1933) Ukraine  country west of Russia • Ukrainian: “extermination by hunger” • Stalin’s Five Year Plan: • 4 million starve to death (1 in 5 people) • Life expectancy: 10.7 yrs (female), 7.9 yrs (male) • CAUSES: • collectivization (extra food shipped to factories in Russia) • Stalin wants to stamp out Ukrainian nationalism / religion • travel restrictions: no one is allowed to leave his/her collective
