  1. ESA Report to DAI/IPR WG Gian Maria Pinna ESA/ESRIN DAI/IPR meeting Colorado Springs 16-20 January 2007

  2. The activity for the evolution of the ESA ground segment into the new MMFI (MultiMIssion Facility Infrastructure) marked a major milestone in December 2006 with the completion of the FEOMI (Facilities Evolution into and Open Multimission Infrastructure) project The new Payload Data Ground Segment fully based on the MMFI entered in operations following the planned migration plan between November and December Systems are stable apart few problems resolved in real time The MMFI has proven his potential during this phase with quick re-adaptation and re-configuration to allocate new requirements and resolving few problems MMFI Current Status

  3. The MMFI evolution is continuing with several projects: Enhanced On-line Archive (E-OA) to easy the access by the users to the entire ESA EO long-term archive MMFI Automatic Configuration System (MACS) to improve and simplify the MMFI configuration Processing Facility Management (PFM) to further simplify the interface with the mission-specific processing systems with a standard interface Distributed Processing Capacity study, in collaboration with DLR, for parallel processing improvement and resource sharing among centers In parallel several mission-specific elements (processing and QC systems) are presently upgraded to be plugged into the MMFI MMFI Future Steps

  4. In parallel new ground segments for ESA and non-ESA missions are implemented with the MMFI: GOCE Long Term Archive (ESA Earth Explorer mission) SMOS Long Term Archive (ESA Earth Explorer mission) Aeolus Long Term Archive (ESA Earth Explorer mission) SPOT 4&5 European coverages received from SpotImage and archived in the MMFI MMFI-based new missions

  5. The MMFI is today available in several centres in Europe: Kiruna (S), Maspalomas (E), Matera (I), Obepfaffenhofen (D), Farnborough (UK) New installations of MMFI (full or partial) are presently on-going or planned for 2007: Tromsoe (N), Sodankila (Fi), Toulouse (F) MMFI facilities

  6. CASPAR ESA test-bed based on MMFI. DLR GOME processor under GRID for CASPAR (under Distributed Processing Capacity project) Phase-A study for GMES Payload Data Ground Segment architecture completed. Baseline for Sentinels ground segment facilities is MMFI Support CCSDS activities with staff and contractual (Gael) support Other MMFI related activities

  7. Transcription HW&SW from old media (D1, DLT) to AMS (StorageTek T9940B based) continuing for the historical datasets Transcription of Envisat off-line datasets also started (several hundreds of thousands tapes to be transcribed) HARM(Historical Archive Rationalization and Management)

  8. SAFE (Standard Archive Format for Europe) Initial set of converters accepted Also data stitcher acceptance completed Initiated definition of SAFE for Envisat L1 and L2 products SAFE Toolbox development project to be started in March 2007 HARM/SAFE presented to ESA’s DOSTAG (Data Operations Science and Technical Advisory Group) at ESA’s delegates level HARM(Historical Archive Rationalization and Management)
