  4. THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT

  5. VII . You shall not commit adultery. MODERN VERSION : YOU SHALL NOT EVEN LOOK AT ANOTHER PERSON WITH LUST IN YOUR HEART.

  6. Selfishness is the root cause of sin. The mainly reason people commit adultery is for selfish reasons of lust and loneliness.

  7. Remember the words of Paul in Philippians 2: “Do nothing with selfish ambition or conceit but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others as better than himself.”

  8. “Let each look out not only for their own interest, but also for the interests of others.”

  9. THE COMMANDMENT ACCORDING TO MOSES • Exodus 20:14“You shall not commit adultery. • Leviticus 20:10“‘If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.

  10. THE COMMANDMENT ACCORDING TO PROVERBS • Prov. 6:32: “ But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself. • Jeremiah 23:14And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that not one of them turns from their wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”

  11. THE COMMANDMENT ACCORDING TO CHRIST • 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[a]28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Mat. 5:27-28) • “17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’[a] and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Mat. 19:17-19)

  12. It comes from the heart • “21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” (Mark 7:21-23 )

  13. ADULTERY • It is the break of the covenant of one flesh between the couple • Other “fleshs” enter into the relationship that should be kept pure.

  14. WHAT IS IT? • PORNEIA: GREEK • illicit sexual intercourse • adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, intercourse with animals etc. • sexual intercourse with close relatives; Lev. 18 • sexual intercourse with a divorced man or woman; Mk. 10:11,

  15. To PAUL Porneia included: • adultery (Exodus 20:14), • incest (Leviticus 18:6-18), • bestiality (Leviticus 18:23), • male and female homosexuality in general (Leviticus 18:22; Romans 1:26-27), • harlotry, including paid prostitution (Ezekiel 16:41), plus perhaps other offenses unspecified • Sexual abuse • pornography.

  16. PORNEIA • The only sexual offense that the church in Jerusalem required new Christians to avoid. This is clear proof of its inclusive nature (see Acts 15:20,29). • 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood… 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.

  17. They certainly would not have ignored adultery, besitality, incest, or male homosexuality, all specifically prohibited in Leviticus 18.

  18. Marriage should be honored • 4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.  (Hebrews 13:4)

  19. MARRIAGE • It is a human institution but it is regulated by divine principles: the marital law is superior than any other law aproved by men related to marriage. • It is a covenant between a man and a woman (Mal. 2:14-16) • Who commits adultery breaks the covenant intermediated by God who witnessed the vows made before Him.

  20. It is a figure of the covenant between Christ and His church • Marriage is a figure of the unbreakable and faithful relationship between Christ and His church. • As Christ is faithful to His church, and the church to her Lord, so husband and wife should also be.

  21. New King James • 14 Yet you say, “For what reason?”  Because the LORD has been witness between you and the wife of your youth,  with whom you have dealt treacherously;  yet she is your companion  and your wife by covenant. 15 But did He not make them one,  hving a remnant of the Spirit? And why one?  He seeks godlly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit,  and let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. 16 “ For the LORD God of Israel says  that He hates divorce,  for it covers one’s garment with violence,”  says the LORD of hosts.

  22. The Message • 13-15And here's a second offense: You fill the place of worship with your whining and sniveling because you don't get what you want from God. Do you know why? Simple. Because God was there as a witness when you spoke your marriage vows to your young bride, and now you've broken those vows, broken the faith-bond with your vowed companion, your covenant wife. God, not you, made marriage. His Spirit inhabits even the smallest details of marriage. And what does he want from marriage? Children of God, that's what. So guard the spirit of marriage within you. Don't cheat on your spouse. 16"I hate divorce," says the God of Israel. God-of-the-Angel-Armies says, "I hate the violent dismembering of the 'one flesh' of marriage." So watch yourselves. Don't let your guard down. Don't cheat.

  23. Thanks God for GRACE • For those who have failed there is forgiveness if they repent. • “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

  24. THE CHALLENGE: • 3It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality (PORNEIA); 4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. (1 Thes. 4:3-8)

  25. 1 Thessalonians 4:4 • Or learn to acquire a wife • 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5  • 3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should learn to acquire a wife in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God
