  1. GSN Quality Initiative • GSN-QC Coordination Meeting • IRIS DMC - 11/16/2011

  2. Initiation - Significant issues with GSN dataset • Lamont Waveform Quality Center identified key issues with GSN data • Some metadata incomplete or incorrect • Some Sensors showing signs of deterioration • Some station issues unresolved for long time • Problems and resolutions not clear to user community

  3. IRIS Board Initiates GSN Quality Assessment • GSN - Prepare a quality assessment strategy • GSN - Convene a Quality Assessment Team (QAT) • Board - appoint GSN Data Quality Panel • GSN - Develop a GSN Quality webpage • QAT - Assess current status of data quality, policies, procedures, and metrics across IRIS • Panel - make recommendations for enhancing GSN data quality • All - Implement Quality Assessment System

  4. GSN Quality Webpage • www.iris.edu/hq/programs/gsn/quality • Describes quality initiative • current quality status of GSN (interim) • GSN upgrade progress

  5. Quality Assessment Team • IRIS • Anderson (chair) • Ahern, Woodward, Busby, Fowler (Gridley) • USGS • Gee, Bolton, McNamara, Hutt, Storm, Ringler • IDA • Davis, Berger

  6. QAT Mission • Document current waveform quality on a station-by-station basis • Review and correct, as necessary, metadata for all stations • Identify sources of waveform quality problems (sensors, sites, systems) • Review historical data to document and correct problems with metadata • Assess current practices, policies and procedures • Develop metrics and procedures for routine quality assessment • Establish reporting mechanisms to communicate data quality

  7. Panel ResponseRomanowicz, Lay, Kanamori, Ekström, Benz • Technical Approaches of the QAT are sound • GSN station certification is required • Standardization of QC practices across GSN • Metrics must feed into a management process • Communications with User community • Publicly available QC monitor • Remediation plans on line • two-way communication (feedback)

  8. Many Efforts Underway • GSN (ASL and IDA) making adjustments to policies, procedures and practices of QA • Continued work on NGS rollout and station calibration • DMC efforts on MUSTANG and QC review • need to all these efforts are coordinated

  9. For this meeting • Reports from USGS, IDA, and DMC on QA initiatives underway • What tools under development have pan-IRIS/USGS applications? • Concepts of coordinated QA Implementation • How can we best coordinate our efforts and share implementation? • Some redundancies necessary, but how can we optimize? • How can we share this across all IRIS programs? • How do we move forward and continue this exchange?
