  1. 12/2/13EQ: How do questions play a role in scientific investigations? 1. Set up journals: Number Pages. Set up Table of Contents on pages 1-5. NOTES Simpson Sheet HW: Finish numbering Journal Pages and Simpson Sheet.

  2. 6-1.2Scientific Method Notes: Testable Questions (ISN ___) What type of questions can be answered through a scientific investigation and data collection ? Testable Questions The investigation will test one Independent Variable (Also called ManipulatedVariable) The question should include the relationship between the independent and dependent variable. (Also called the responding variable.)

  3. II. Examples of testable questions: A. How does the amount of exercise affect heart rate and breathing rate? • The independent (manipulated) variable is the amount of exercise (number of repetitions, amount of weights, or duration of exercise). • The dependent (responding) variable, involving two body systems interacting, are heart rate and breathing rate.

  4. ISN 6: Test the Testable Question • Write a description of how you would test the question: How does the amount of exercise affect heart rate and breathing rate? • Include: • Hypothesis • Materials needed • Procedures (steps) you would follow to create an investigation. • An example of a data table you would use to record the data.

  5. More Examples of Testable Questions: B. How does the amount of clay in soil affect permeability of water? • Independent variable? The amount of clay • Dependent (responding) variable? How well water flows through the soil.

  6. C. Does the amount of baking soda added to vinegar affect the amount of gas produced? • What is the independent variable? The amount of baking soda • The dependent (responding) variable? The amount of gas

  7. EQ: What makes a good hypothesis? • Answer EE question • Hypothesis Notes on ISN 9.

  8. ISN 9: Hypothesis Notes • After doing researchabout the testable question it is time to make a hypothesis. • A hypothesis is a statement that makes a prediction about a topic. • Hypothesis should be based on the testable question and be testable with an investigation.

  9. All controlled investigations should have one of the following types of hypothesis. Types of Hypothesis: 1. Positive or Negative • The longer the duration of exercise, the faster the heart and breathing rate. (positive statement ?) • The more clay in the soil, the lower the rate of permeability of water. (negative statement?) • The more baking soda added to the vinegar, the greater the amount of gas produced in the reaction. (positive statement?)

  10. IF …. Then……. Hypothesis: (cause-and-effect) For example: • “If there is more clay in the soil, then the rate of permeability will increase.” • The experiment is conducted to support or not support a hypothesis. • If the hypothesis is not supported in the experiment, it can still be used to help rule out some other ideas.

  11. HW: Vocab 1- 9 Frayer Models -Using a ruler create frayer models for each vocabulary word 1-9. (inquiry slm) -Put 2 frayers on each page. Use 12-16.
